Killing Slugs and Snails

By LabourofLove

COFFEE KILLS SLUGS & SNAILS. Make very strong caffeinated coffee, then mix it half and half with water and put into a trigger or compressed-air sprayer. Spray on plants and the ground that snails & slugs travel on. As they move over the treated areas, they take up the caffeine through their pseudopod (foot) and it gives them heart attacks in 72 hours. Cheap coffee works as well as the more expensive sort. I use espresso because it's more finely ground (works better in my machine). I also run the water through the grounds more than once to extract as much as possible. Cheers to the University of Hawaii for discovering an elegant and simple solution to nasty critters.

That's a new one for me too. I use 1:1 ammonia/water and spray leaves, ground, etc. I don't like the salt idea.

He was supposed to be a Lhasa/Shih Tzu mix. Both parents were in the house and the rest of the litter came out that way. Only here, the Lhasa part is right, but I think Mama L let a Spaniel mailman or milkman under the fence, too, because with Russell having gotten to 36 pounds, Daddy sure wasn't Shih Tzu! He was born on September 11, 2011, given to me at seven weeks and died from cancer a couple of months ago right after he turned 10. I miss him a lot. Was a big ole funny, goofy Odie dog. Lovey dubby Smiling These are my other two. Looking at a four year old Irish Russell terrier (Jack Russell with short, stocky legs) that needs a new home. Going to introduce them all later in the week.

Never would have thought it of me, but he sure did end up as mine. Was my first dog. At 44 years old, I instantly turned into one of the I-speak-to-my-dog-in-baby-talk people. Not quiiiiite gooey, but pretty close. Guess we really are never too old to learn new things. Smiling Now I tell people who ask that all my kids are canine.

OK back to original programming.

I never give my dog caffeine. She bounces off the walls already! Better the snails and slugs get a cuppa joe.

Not on anything I've used it on, but I've not tried it on anything with especially tender blooms.

...and I wonder if a raccoon or skunk eats the heavily caffeineated ones, they will go zipping around the woods. Blinking

I once saw a Roadrunner sucking on a cigarette butt... it was wild with agitation, running in circles with the butt in it's mouth. So funny and VERY sad at the same time. I have to imagine that caffeine would have an effect on a small critter.

Once saw a Nova production on PBS. Study of spiders making their webs - you know how all of them make a different kind/style of web. They chose a normal garden spider that makes the big symmetrical web. They gave several spiders a dose of caffeine, cocaine, alcohol, or marijuana. Guess which spider made the most screwed up web? Atypical of the web it normally made?

Just got an idea.

The great big coffee maker that I have used once every 10 years will be perfect for this. It makes 20 cups at a shot, so after diluting it, there will be a lot to use. It nearly went to the Salvation Army their last trip here. Now off to buy some caffeinated coffee. Can't drink that anymore or I start to climb my pergola. Rolling on the floor laughing
