Knowing and hearing stories about the woman we bought our property from, I've no doubt she trompted through the woods and dug up this holly. Wanted to add to the DB, but under which holly?

The wild hollies we have around here are Ilex opaca var. opaca and they look just like your's, especially the trunk.

They get almost as big as the other understory trees - maybe 40 feet tall.

interesting as it shows photos of leaves without spiny points as well as the prickly ones. Says sometimes they aren't prickly.

Yes, that's a good site there with the fantastic photos. I bookmarked it because I certainly want some holly trees for our place. And I want to be ablee to tell the males from the females.
