Possibly we'll have 3 freezes this week, so the plan is to have an extra feeder to swap with the one outside. Even if the nectar isn't exactly frozen in the early a.m., they'd probably appreciate the warmer nectar anyway.

Haha! Don't think so, but I've heard some people sometimes put extra sugar in the nectar recipe, on the theory that it can help a little to prevent the nectar freezing. BTW, have you ever hear of drunk birds? Some of the fruit eating birds (like Cedar Waxwings) have been known to eat fermented fruits and act drunken...of course, some of the birds don't survive in those cases. The rule, would be "don't eat fermented fruit and fly".

Evidently there's a fruit tree with the same issue in S. Africa - I think a bunch of the bush animals (giraffes? Elephants?) have the same experience. There's a youtube vid on it.

Need to refill at least one of my feeders. A few years ago I had a friend who lived in Eastpoint, Fl. She spotted a different hummer in her yard and called about banding it. I *think* it was a rufus. When the people came she got her kids out of school so they could watch...they even got to hold it. How cool is that for young kids?

When my DD moved back to the Atlanta area, for some reason she had a hummer that kept getting in her garage. About 6-7 months pregnant she'd climb a ladder to rescue it...everyday for a week It is really awsome to hold a hummer in your hand...I have had to rescue several that have flown into and gotten caught in the screen of our screen room....do you push on the beak or pull on the body? Happily most managed to get free, but I did have to pull one out.
