OK... I've had this for years... and it's now everywhere in the garden... first... in middle spring after a rain .. everywhere in the garden I get these little dark sprouts... the color of the lower leaves... they don't sprout out now and through a few weeks... every one sprouts the same day... evrywhere.. none sprout earlier or later ... just everyone up today... OK... it grows for a bit as this little bunch of dark leaves... then it starts upward... and develops these leaves on the top of it that are the brightest red... not a flower... but redder than a rose...and bigger than any flower as you see... it continues putting out the electric red leaves as it grows up.. and will grow tall... getting to be three or four feet tall... always with the bright red on top... till frost... in the spring I go about madly pulling it out of everywhere... letting a few grow as accents... in the fall it starts putting out these well not really flowers ... but I guess they are.. clumps of fluff looking stuff back aganst the stem.. all the way up the stalk to under the red leaves.. these i guess are falling to the ground and having them sprout up everywhere on that special day in the spring..
who is it... ???
this is a maybe 1 ft tall one from the middle of August... already with a great red color to it..

Do you get flowers? To set around it should produce seed.

Yes, Amaranthus and what a beauty it is! It looks a lot like Amaranthus tricolor 'Early Splendor':

edited to say: Oops ... that was just a wild guess on my part. JR is really great at identifying plants of all types. Thanks Janet!

'Early Splendor' has the correct colour Lin but the leaf shape is different.
