I would not call it a friendly palm, because one really had to watch out for its mean 'thorns' shed all over the forest floor when stepping on them, especially when only wearing toe slippers Hilarious!
These were needle hard and sharp, pitch black, quite long too with around 5 cm length.
I met these big palms in a dense rainforest in the immediate proximity of the sea. It was impossible to take a shot of the whole palm because of the density of the vegetation..The foliage was a very dark green, the underside silver-grayish..

Thanks Hetty, maybe an Arenga sp, but Arenga pinnata it cannot be as that originates from Asia..
I have been googling images of Arenga but didn't find any pictures yet with the black needles all over it, the needles where not only on the trunk but also on the underside of the 'fronds'..

Bactris setosa has lots of spines, not sure if the trunk is correct or if it has silvered leaves..

Thanks so much Janet, it sure is a Bactis sp. Thumbs up
I'm not sure if mine is Bactis setosa, but I have seen others more younger palms that look exactly like that, the one I photographed was an old tree with a very thick trunk..
I'll do some search with Bactis sps from the area I was in..

I found it! Hurray!
I met the same palm again like on my trip 4 years ago.
The Bactris route was leading to a dead end, I didn't find any with the silvery undersides of the fronds nor the arrangement of the spines on the trunk.
Then I came upon an Astrocaryum sp somewhere on the web, forgot where Rolling my eyes. and my guts told me I was on the right track!
The Flora do Brasil only mentions 1 species (fortunately! Hilarious! )
It is Astrocaryum aculeatissimum!
