Really like that seedling, Fred. I love the ruffles and that beautiful eye, plus the colors are very pleasing to me.

One of the things i look for in a good toothy seedling, or daylily,..... is the sepals - if the sepals are bare it usually takes away from the overall appeirance - Larry Grace's Dr. Stump seems to have good sepal coverage.....I have found the pollen Parent to DB to give very good sepal coverage...

Different toothy ones can be seen here...

I am very happy that I won Angels Gather Around on the auction. I am also happy that I won Over Heated and Kindling the Flames. So I will have these next spring. I will add these to my Trimmer oranges that I love so much.

Fantastic Fringe is a super parent for the toothy sepals. Looking at that site I see a few others that have toothy sepals. That is something I have been looking at also as it adds so much to a bloom that otherwise the sepals are just there and adding nothing to the bloom itself on certain forms. They can be stunning on other forms without all the extra but one needs to pick and choose what looks good. I don't think a toothy sepal would look right next to ruffles or straight edged petals, but maybe it will be the next newbie.
Sepals, another thing I look for in an eyed or patterned daylily is the eye or pattern being repeated on the sepals along with the same petal edge. Makes it so complete.

I have always liked 'American Freedom.' I don't know anyone growing it up north, so I have never tried to get it. I have seen 'J.T. Davis.' I liked it. I know a few people grow it up here, but I don't recall how it did. 'Mrs. John Cooper' is another I have seen up here.

I think Ohio hybridizer Jim Biaglow used a lot of Grace's. I remember him being wild about Clothed in Glory. Jim lived in town in a suburb of Cleveland and had a brick wall built by his house with brick walkways to try to grow the tender Southern plants. They have a lot of snow cover up there, so that probably helped too. I know a few people who have a brick walled in location to grow Southern plants.

If anyone knows if American Freedom grows well in zone 5, I would put it on my get list.

I grow American Freedom. Had one plant that bloomed year before last and it was next to a similar pant and the tags got blown away so I got another one last spring and when it bloomed I could see it was still there and doing great when I compared it to the one I just got. I now have a clump in 2 spots in case one bites the dust. Do get it as it is a beauty and a good grower here for sure. I am zone 3-4.

Oh, Stephanie, that is great to hear. I still remember the first bloom I saw of it down in John Rice's greenhouse. I just looked it up and saw it was for sale for $15. I can afford that!

I also grow American Freedom. It isn't a real fast increaser here in zone 5. Think I have had it 3 years and still only 2 fans.

Cindy - actually slow increase - as long as the plant is healthy and blooming well - is something that works well for me, since I need help to dig and divide.

Ya'll fellow "fans" of Fred. It's beginning to look alot like we need to extend our Group boundries to include Lyle as a another grower to befriend. I know it's a looooonnnng way from Florida to Arizona but we all know that magic happens on Christmas Eve. SOOOO, with that in mind, we((the friends group) aka a bunch of theives)should be able to easily visit(raid) Fred's garden in Florida then hop on some magic and fly to Arizona in the blink of an eye. Were, we can visit(raid) Lyle's garden and drool over (steal) as many of his plants as we can see(have the energy to dig up). Oh, I think I have read where these guys may have some of their plants in pots. This will make our visit(night raid) go a lot easier(since we won't have to dig up so many plants) to photograph(walk off with) their plants. Once we have finished at these two sites, we can hope back on some magic and get home in time to put our photos( stolen plants) under the Christmas Tree to set and dream of sugar plums dancing in our heads!! (OK, I'll admit, that we know we'll dream of daylily blooms to come next Spring not some darned old sugar plums!)

Have some fun, share a smile and dream of seedlings with navy blue blooms sporting white shark teeth!

Blessings to all, Mona
