That's so sweet of you Vic! I did get to see it though --- Sharon SWORE me to secrecy --- matter of fact I didn't know who was going to get it. I really do love it. I told Sharon that's one I could hang in my home. You know how you can really like certain pieces of art but you wouldn't be interested in LIVING with them? This is one I could LIVE with.

Well gosh, Mary, if I painted the subject first I'd lay my arm all over it and smudge it trying to paint the background! Not to mention the fact that it would look like the back ground overlapped the day lily. I'm such a messy painter. (Teasing you, Mary.)

Seriously, I usually do paint the background first, but I paint all of it in layers, so it's just the back I start with, then I come back to it often.

you painted the *essence* of a daylily.... showing us its soul. Details detract from the essence of a soul (imo)

Capturing essence is what I try to do, both with words and with paint.
Sometimes I fail miserably, sometimes it works.
