Growing Unusual Fruits and Vegetables from the Grocery Store

By Bubbles
December 15, 2011

Have you ever wandered through a grocery produce section and wondered how some of the more exotic fruits and vegetables are grown and how they should be prepared? I recently roamed the aisles of a local grocery that caters to our city's growing international transplants. I had never seen so many root vegetables that were unknown to me. My husband wasn't along and therefore could not be embarrassed by his wife, so I asked permission to photograph some of the produce with my phone. The produce manager smiled and said, "People do it all the time."

I'm sorry for the confusion Anna. I call the ginger roots 'palms' as they favor a hand. The ginger root was what I meant.

I was told years ago to plant that 'palm' horizontally, an inch or two under the soils' surface. I've heard it will bloom but have never seen the flowers on the edible ginger plant.

I am adding the pickled ginger recipe to my stash ~ thanks much Christine.

Such good info! I am going to plant some this afternoon. I happen to have some organic ginger root , so I am guessing no soaking required?

Anna, I thought you were referring to the article, instead of Kristi's post, but both are good information!

I would just soak the ginger for an hour or two anyway before you plant it. You can put it on the counter and forget it for a while. If you plant it now, you'll definitely need to keep it indoors, or in a greenhouse. You may have better success waiting until Feb. or March when everything else is waking up, but that's just my opinion. Let us know how it goes!

You are all very welcome. I'm gonna have to make a batch of pickled ginger myself! I used the last of it when I made coleslaw, it's pretty good added flavor. Big Grin
