I am looking at places to plant phlox and my Allium spots look tempting.I dont necessarily want them to bloom for a combo because the alliums bloom in spring and phlox bloom late summer. I just wonder if they would be friendly planted together?

Wow, isn't that lovely?

I'm afraid I don't have enough experience with phlox to help you out, Jo Ann. Down here we can plant our phlox (the tall ones, at least) in a partially shady area, but I suspect that you can't.
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

Since they don't bloom at the same time, I shouldn't think it would make a difference as to color when you plant them together. I friend's mother had phlox in her perrieniel garden when i was a child, but I only remember the phlox which had purple or white flowers.

I must have been misguided when I posted the thread and the question has been misunderstood.
I dont care about bloom time. I wanted to know if they would grow well together. I found a photo on Google that shows them growing together. The spent allium blooms are fantastic.
I wanted to be sure they wouldnt crown eachother out.

In my experience, Phlox is not a rapid grower/spreader. It's very well behaved.

I grow Phlox with Monarda and Coneflowers. Green Grin!

And it looks like it holds it's own with monarda, Lee Ann? Lovely pic! I bet it smells wonderful there, too.

Some of my phlox are in part shade, too. I spray them all once a year with baking soda in a hose end sprayer, and no mildew.

WOW thats a beautiful spot. Nice to know about part shade Polly.
I have some phlox chosen to go with Echies Summer Sky and a few feet away Purple cone flowers. Many of my gardens have little blooms after July.
I am such a meglamaniac I have chosen a lot of different varieties and cant let go of any of them so now I am scouting out places to put them I have a few bare spots near my alliums hence the thread.

Everyone has been really helpful.

Monarda hmmmmm I have some but will need to check to see if there is room. It grows with JI's and Lavander and Lilies and iris.

Juli, that's gorgeous.

Joanne, have you grown any of the other Big Sky echs? I've only had one- Twilight- and it never did well in the 4 years I had it. I finally tossed it in the compost, still alive but sad. Lots of other people have had problems with them, even Clint
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/peren/msg0614203010...

Just thought I'd mention it. Some folks probably get a lot of them to do well, but it seems many of them don't.

Thanks for the heads-up on Sky series. The article is spot on.
I agree about Summer Sky. and will add ,when its starting to pass bloom the petals are blotchy and rusty.I lso agree about not enough color gradiation ,too subtle.
I have TiKi torch and its increasing well but the other orange Sundown is not taking hold and has distorted blooms also. It has one more year here and then OUT.

I didnt think about phlox with DL's I will need to check that part of my garden to see how they might be wedged in.
Thank you everyone who took time to send advise and photos.

Wow, I haven't seen a photo on this this thread that didn't knock my socks off.... Hurray! Hurray!

Jo Ann, do you have any idea what those "spent" Alliums are?

Jo Ann, somehow some of my photos seem to be among the missing, but I have planted Phlox with Daylilies and Monarda, too.

This one has a Salix and Hosta behind it. It's in full sun.

Nice looking Janice
The photo of spent alliums is from the net. As far as I can tell the alliums look to be the same or near the height of the phlox.
Hust thinking out loud here,I also think I see salvia might be Carradonna which is 20+ inches high.
I am not familier with any tall alliums except Purple Sensation ( just planted this year) and Globemaster (ditto) but taller they are about 40 inches high.
. Since these alliums are in seed stage I have no color clue as to which they are.
If you wanted to reproduce this look I would just be shure of height when you buy alliums.
The phlox come in 16-40 inches.
If I was starting a section like this I would combine Salvia Carradona, Allium Purple Sensation 24-30 inches and any tall phlox like Davids Lavander,Nicky both tall.

Good think its early and dark. I found another phlox allium combo Purple sensation and Woodland Phlox.

These are in bloom together but its possible to see heights .I dont know how long Woodland phlox bloom but suspect they are earlier yhan the garden phlox we are talking about.
If anyons has more accurate information Jump In.

The allium heads will stay pretty much as long as you want them to stay. They will go well with your phlox and give a lot textural interest to your garden. There are all different types of alliums at all different heights that are available.

The only alliums that I have, that do not produce a round head are the Flavum and the Pulchellum. I love these as they remind me of fireworks and their bloom time is later than Globemaster or Jade Eyes.

Alliums are the one of the bulbs that I continue to add each fall. The flowers are so different and beautiful when they are in flower and the interest they provide to the garden after they are finished flowering is well worth it. They are also a very easy plant -

Not for me. I've not had much luck with the alliums before, but Jo talked me into trying again this year.

What kind of soil do you have Carolyn?

Polly

I never thought my soil was very good - it is full of rocks and clay. Nasturtiums seem to love it and they don't do well in fertile soil. The only thing I really fertilize are my clems and roses.
.
I have always planted bulbs and other plants using bone meal. Not sure if that makes a difference or not as I think of bone meal primarily for root development. The alliums do seem to thrive, though.

One other thing- different types of alliums will flower during different months of the growing season. So, with different varieties, you can get a broad coverage of flowering alliums.
