Here is a good start on a project I've been working on for longer than I'd care to admit. It's a custom database for specific plants, bringing all the DB features of a particular plant and giving enhanced access to that information.

It's in beta right now and there is not much to see yet, but it'll greatly expand in the days ahead.

The big feature right now is a custom "Search by characteristics" engine. So, you can go into the Daylilies database and search based on ploidy, scape height, bloom traits, hybridizer, year of introduction, and things like that.

Here are some examples:

Daylilies
Roses
Clematis
Irises
Sempervivum
Jovibarba
Heucheras
Dahlias

Have fun playing around with that search. Smiling

I just tried it and got the following message:

"No results found. Your query may have been too specific. Try removing some of the options and try again."

was in Roses and only chose 4 fields..

What were the four fields?

When you removed some of the options, I assume you got results?

Sounds like it's working the way it should.

Question:
Searched Iris
Japanese (Ensata)
Bloom Season: Mid Season

Iris Silverband did not show up as it's listed as an "Early-mid season" meaning both early and mid. Can/should the search engine pick this up or should the data be entered differently?

The search engine doesn't think like we do. All it can do is go through all the plants and see what is checked off. If something is checked off, then it returns the result. It doesn't realize that "Early-mid season" is actually somehow related to "Early" and "Mid".

So, really, this is a question of architecture of how the irises are structured in the database... I would say that if "Early" and "Mid" are both checked off, then it seems like "Early-Mid" should be checked off also. Or isn't this redundant anyway?

Lee Anne, the rose section will work better when all of the details have been moved to the checkboxes. They were in a different format in Cubits and have to be changed. The process has begun, but I'm not through yet.

Edited to say that you're welcome to ask for suggestions or recommendations in the rose forum until the process has been completed. We love to enable!

It's a beautiful thing!!

For the daylilies, we still have to fill in the base bloom colors for the majority of the entries but we're plugging away at them!

Oh my goodness Dave! You do realize this makes you an enabler don't you? I searched for daylily, black bloom, evergreen, toothed edge & I came up with "Eight Miles High". Had to star it. Now it's on my must have list.

Enabler!
