I am happy to report that the person who used the photo did realize they did not take it and has been very gracious and has apologized. I did tell them they can use the photo in the future, if they put a credit to me on the photo.

I am glad I wrote to her and did not get Mike involved.

I have had some of my photos that I posted in the forums uploaded to the database by someone else, although credit was given to me. Shouldn't that decision be left to the photographer? I am with you Julie. I spend a lot of time taking photos in my garden and if someone asks permission to use my photo, I have always given it. It just seems polite and the thing to do to not use someone else's photo without permission. I don't want someone coming into my yard and using my gardening tools without my permission either Smiling

Ann, here is the link where Dave explained how someone can propose an image in a thread to be added to the database.
http://garden.org/thread/view_...

You can request Dave to 'lock' out your images from this option if you wish.
You can delete your images as well. Just go to the image in the database and scroll to the bottom and click on "Delete this image" and away it goes.

Personally, I am flattered should someone come across an older thread and find a photo not in the database & propose them to be added. Smiling
We are finding older threads and many folks that no longer post and since they publicly shared their images here to begin with, it would be a shame not to also include them in the database, IMHO.

Oh well, I was in the middle of responding to this and WHAM!! My computer just begin to orderly shut down. No warning, no I'm going to update in 5 minutes no nothing. So, I'm back after a complete power down of my laptop. Microsoft was kind enough to bring me back to this thread, but not kind enough to keep my 10 lines of typing.

I might be guilty of doing a search to find a picture of one that I planned to buy. Then, share that photo with ya'll if it was just so great that I couldn't wait for you to see it. Most times, I'd just provide a link to it if you wanted to look. But, to use someones photo to sell my plants, nope that's not nice. I do think if you want to use the hybridizers photo, that this is ok, but please post that it's not your photo. After someone has had a plant for several years and then wants to sell that plant, I don't understand why they don't use their own photos. I really do like seeing a picture of the plant I'm buying or atleast one that shows it growing in your garden. I'd ask before using, that's for sure.

I spend many many hours taking photos of my plants. So, I know why anyone would be just a little bit angry if someone just up and takes their photos for personal gain.

So, be a little angry, then if you can, shove it aside and smile, you'll feel better. This is a great place to relieve pent up emotions. That's why I love coming for a visit every day.

Blessings, Mona

I buy a lot of daylilies every year and do not take pictures of most, unless I think it's something someone else would like to see. I have permission from the people I buy from to use there photos, in fact they prefer that I use there photos for obvious reasons. I waste enough time taking photos of my own flowers. In most cases I would rather someone use my photos when posting my daylilies, anyone has permission to use any photo I post. This is just the way I feel about the subject and in no way meant to change the way you feel.

It is okay with me if someone wants to use any of the photos that I post. I would like someone to ask permission if they want to use them for selling though, but if I put an id on them, then that is okay also.

I have used garden photos to look at when I buy a plant and want to see how it looks, but after I take
my own photos, I delete them. That is what is nice about the database, one can just go look at the
flowers there, without having to go searching endlessly for one in internet land.

I will be on and off for awhile, have had some health issues the last month, which is not completely
resolved yet, but getting there.

I can see both sides of this.

There is a website that people post photos on for others to use in any way they want (the registered gallery link). Sometimes if I don't have a photo or can't find a photo from the hybridizer (may be an older one no longer on their site) I will look here for one. http://www.hybridizer.net/ It does have who took the photo and when I use one from here I credit the photographer.

I do use my photos and I also use the hybridizers photos on the Lily Auction, just depends.

Last year on the lily auction there was this particular HOT selling daylily and every photo was the hybridize'rs photo EXCEPT one, it was the seller's photo. The one that had the seller's photo didn't get bid on (except by me) and it was a double fan while the others were all single fans. So I got a double fan for $50 while the single fans were going for $60 and up. This happened twice so I got 2 DF of the same daylily . And this was a reputable seller so it wasn't that they were unknown or anything. IMHO, I think people scroll through and just look for photos sometimes and don't read the description or search for a particular one and if the photo is not the hybridizer's it gets over looked. I know people want to see what the daylily looks like in others gardens, but what it looks like in my garden can be totally different in someone elses garden. I have good examples of that. It all depends on soil, climate, and what have you. So if someone buys a daylily from me based off my photos, it still may not look like that when they bloom in their garden.

Just my humble opinion Green Grin!

And anyone can use any of my photos if they wish.

I had a problem last year when using the hybridizers photo. I had a daylily I had grown for a couple of years and had also seen it several times in other gardens and none even resembled the hybridize'rs photo. When it bloomed for the person, they sent me a photo and it looked like what I had sent them the before, but they were not convinced they had the correct flower. I told them I would refund there money or send them another plant and explained to them that it would never look like the catalog photo, they chose another plant. After bloom season this year they sent me another payment for the replacement flower because they had seen in blooming in another garden and it look just like the ones I had sent. I know for most we have to buy daylilies from a picture and expect them to actually represent what the flower looks like, most of the time the photos are pretty close and the sellers are honest people who wants there customers to be happy with what they recieve. Anyway this was one time I should have taken a photo myself.

Fred, that is exactly why I was disappointed more than normal when I saw the photo. I have grown the plant for a long time. It has never bloomed for me the way it did in that photo. The photo was taken in a greenhouse.

I agree with Fred totally. I know that some pictures may be a little touched up, but we should be able to atleast identify the plant from the hybridizers photo. When it's so much different, that you doubt you have the right plants, that's bad.

Now for the flip side, we've all got plants that grow in our gardens that don't look like what may grow in a garden across the street even though we know they are the same plant. So, all factors must be cosidered.

Blessings, Mona

I really wish that more hybridizers' photos looked like the actual garden blooms, and now that I have a little more experience I can tell that when a bloom glows bright pink or blue the color has been greatly enhanced. I certainly don't mind if the color is enhanced to make the picture look more like the true color(s) of the flowers, as I have trouble myself with pictures lightening up so much that they don't acccurately reflect the true colors, and of course pictures taken in shade make the colors look different than those taken in sunlight. But the one that I really learned from was TALLADEGA, which I know I've mentioned before. I was inexperienced enough that when I saw the hybridizer's picture I actually believed it would be that fire engine red color. Here's what the flower looked like in my garden:

And if anyone wants to see the hybridizer's picture please scroll down the left side of the website and select TALLADEGA to see it. What a difference! I was so terribly disappointed that I couldn't even see that the real TALLADEGA is quite pretty on its own -- just not really bright red! And I've now learned to carefully read the description, because it did say it was a shade of rose red. I just didn't believe someone would post a picture that was that far off! Live and learn!
