Very interesting discussion re use of Epsom salts. I have been using it and now I am questioning whether to use it again or not. Below are two photos of the same daylily, in the same spot, not touched, divided or anything. The first photo is from 2009 and the second from 2011. I wonder if the use of various fertilizers can cause this difference. I was really disappointed in the color this year. This seedling has good bud count and is a pod stud, but the color mostly looked brown/tan this year.

Betty, my plant of Talladega looks like yours. I learned a valuable lesson after buying it. I learned to read the description before buying! I asked Guy Pierce about the photo Floyd Cove used for Talladega and he said someone other than him chose the photo. It took me a long while to really appreciate it for its own beauty instead of always mentally comparing it to the hybridizer's photo.

I have used epsom salts but no longer am going to use it. A local master gardener who writes for our local newspaper had an interesting article about epsom salts. He said in the article that the area I live in has ample magnesium in the soil and that the use of epsom salts could actually hinder plant growth and performance if more is added. I have experienced that so I am inclined to think that I have too much in my soil and probably will just use milorganite or a slow release fertilizer this summer.

Yes, there are some areas that have enough naturally in the soil. It's the same with fertilizers, the middle number can build up in the soil and be more harmful than good. That's one reason a lot of places have gone from triple number (10-10-10 or 20-20-20) fertilizer to the 3-1-2 ratio or close to it (18-6-12 or 16-4-8).

That's why it is important to do a soil test to see what you need to use instead of just adding stuff. You can get a soil test kit at Lowes or Home Depot. Some local agricultural extension offices will do it for free.

Some are and some aren't. Fred can chime in on this one better when he gets on. He gets her collection every year.

Hi to all, Michele, I'm redoing my plant locations this year too. I have been thinking(dangerous for me) that I would arrange mine in color groups also. I hope to have maybe 2 sales here at my home in 2012 and I was thinking that people that are not into collecting daylilies might find it easier to buy them if they were in collections by color.

I also plan to put all of my sale daylilies in one area, probably be out front. Of course the rest would be available for viewing but most of these would not be for sale. I say that lightly because I would sale most any of them if the price is right.

I am getting better at doing a google search on a plant that I really want to buy. Then I click on images after the search results comes up. You will then see many many photos of Talladega. Of course this will show some seedlings with this in the parentage, but you can move your cursor over the photo and it will show if it's just the orginal.

I forget which plant I wanted so bad back in the summer but of course money was the main issue. Also, when I would do the search, only photos from the hybridizer would show. This made me very leary. I think surely someone else has a good photo. I have all kinds of alarms going off in my head when a plant has been out over 2 years and there isn't any other photos of it.

This is just one of my new found ways of looking for info. If i don't forget my on knowledge and get caught up on bidding on one on the LA, I also check it out on here. Ususally someone here will give you good dirt on any plant. I think this is very important, too.

Blessings, Mona

Cynthia: Here is the thread from 2010 where people posted photos of Nicole's daylilies.

The thread "Nicole Harry" in Daylilies forum

I have noticed that some of hers with purples aren't true to color
