My journal still not here Sad but I DO live in a tiny town, and mail (magazines, bulk mail, etc) usually takes longer. Guess I will be patient.

I mailed in an order for those mini's. But now I see they are in the sold out list online. I hope I get my set. And I don't particularly like mini's - so this is fascinating for me! ~Jan

Jan, I had ordered LITTLE SURFER GIRL in the fall and Karen let me know then that they wanted to wait until spring to sell/ship because the plants were still small. And when the catalog came out and I realized that for only $50 more I could get all three instead of just the one, I emailed Karen and asked if I could change to ordering the mini collection. She responded that because I already had LITTLE SURFER GIRL reserved that was no problem, but that they are having to list the collection as "Sold Out" now because they don't have enough of LITTLE SURFER GIRL -- but they have plenty of the other two. So I wonder if you emailed them and asked if you could still order the collection but maybe get LSG later, maybe you could get them that way. Although I do remember that they are phasing out the mini's, so maybe there will be no "later" for that one. But if you really really want that collection, why don't you email Karen and see what they can do. Maybe someone who has ordered won't pay up and you could get one that way...

Since I saw this, I have thought about it, and would be willing to wait, or work something else out. I figured they would contact me.

But I like your idea better, and will wait until next week and contact them. Thanks for the suggestion! ~Jan

Jan, just in case they say they will not have LITTLE SURFER GIRL available at all in the future because they are phasing out the mini's, I would recommend that you peruse the small/mini daylilies by Grace Stamile at the bottom of all the listings, plus the recent ones near the top (especially the $50 ones) to see if there is something there that you would really like, and if Karen responds that they are sold out of LITTLE SURFER GIRL and will not have it available again maybe you could counter by asking if another $50 mini could be substituted for LSG in the Fall 2011 Mini Collection and maybe they would go for that-- she did indicate that they have plenty of the other two. That price for three mini introductions is really a great deal, and I know Karen tries to please and doesn't want people to be unhappy -- so maybe they would go for that if you did find another that you liked well enough to substitute it for LSG.

I got LITTLE BLOOM RIDER last year, and it's really adorable!

Just a suggestion...
Betty

Oh I like that idea too. I figured they would work with me somehow, most hybridizers do. And I haven't heard anything back, so I am crossing my fingers....~Jan

I don't know why they are not going to be doing small blooms any more. I think they are the only hybridizers that actually do small blooms. The older Siloams are the only other ones I believe.

Grace Stamile is the one who did the small blooms and from what I have heard the Pierce's don't like the small ones. I guess it's just like some don't like doubles or spiders, or big ruffles.

Yes, the Pierces bought the nursery from the Stamiles and I think Guy Pierce is only interested in the large ones. The other hybridizer of the little ones that I'm aware of is Elizabeth Salter, and she has some absolute gems. But I tried to contact them once and couldn't manage it. But I'll have to get a good look at hers when they post their spring introductions -- maybe they'll have an online order form or something. Does anyone know if the Salters do a catalog? I need to go check their website again...

Yes, just checked and they do have an order form you can print out -- you have to click on the bunch of flowers to get it. But the prices never seem to get updated...

Oops -- we're getting off the Floyd Cove subject, aren't we... my bad! Sorry!

I am thinking the Shooters have some but I don't think it is a real big program. I could be wrong. Might have to check their catalog again. Seems to me aye or Elizabeth worked with them.

l was under the impression that miniature was a wave of the future. Everything seems to be getting miniaturized, from hostas to iris.

Guess not.

Personally, I prefer big, bold, huge plants and blooms. In fact, I specifically look for daylilies greater than 30 inches tall. The fact that I really love this miniature collection surprises me, too. It seems to be "calling" to me, and I have no clue where I am going to plant them so they show at their best! ~Jan

Spiders and Ufo's are my favorite too. And as I get older, I do prefer the taller ones. My back just can't take a lot of bending over anymore. I do hybridize for teeth too but I sell most of the seeds. I have planted a few Forestlake Ragamuffin seeds but my main concentration is on dip spiders/ufo's.

Just got a call from them, yes their miniature collection is sold out, but they can give me a collection, with one of the plants having a single fan. If I wanted, they would send me the single fan, plus another cultivar to make it up, and I said that would be fine. I told them to surprise me, whether they sent me a miniature or one of their full size ones. It was great to chat with them, I sure do like plant people! ~Jan

I'm glad they could work with you and that you're OK with their solution, Jan. Did you talk with Karen? I just love her Aussie accent! And in fact, I just exchanged emails with her this morning as I had forgotten BRIDEY GREESON when I placed my order and she's going to add it. She's so great and pleasant to work with!

The bigger the better for me. I do grow a few older minis but I don't add them. Most have been a gift. I love the UFs and large fancy blooms.

Teresa- I too am a bigger, and bigger and bigger blower/ plant person. I am not normally attracted to minis - but this collection just screamed at me. I thought and thought about it for weeks, and finally broke down and ordered it. I am really surprised at myself! ~Jan

HEY! We're here! We joined over here soon after ATP started but never got in the habit of visiting until now. We will be checking in on a regular basis now. There is so little action on DG. No wonder, everyone is here! We like it here!

I placed an order with Floyd Cove back in early December and talked to Karen on the phone, too. I also love her Aussie accent. We are also getting the 2011 Fall Mini Collection. The price was too good to pass up; plus, they were too pretty to not order. We prefer the large blooms (larger the better here), but miniatures have really grown on me. I now like them. I believe that they should be staged in a bed and allowed to clump to have lots of blooms at one time. Like Steph said, plant them in the front of the bed. I will add that if you have a raised bed that is at least a couple feet high, plant them there so they are more visible as you walk by. I even plan to plant a few clumps in very large pots and place them in flower beds. I will add a trailing flowering annual or perennial to the pot to give color and interest after the daylily is finished blooming. Another plus for minis is they usually have lots of buds which make them good show flowers. I also ordered the following from FC for late March/early April shipment:

2 Texas Kaleidoscope
Caribbean Blue
Chaotic
Magnificent Magpie
2 Rose F. Kennedy

Jan, I am glad that you will be getting the collection after all, and a nice surprise will be in store for you!

Doris
