I also dislike the cold. Though by any standard other than a Californian, what we have here is not considered cold. It's wonderful that you still have so much color in your yard. I also discovered Nerine a few years ago for fall/winter color. But, mines never seem to mulitply. I plant 5 bulbs - I get 5 blooming plants the next year.....sometimes less, but never more. Your patch looks so full and healthy. Do your nerine bulbs multiply?

Yes, mine grow into great big clumps and have to be divided regularly.

Speaking of the cold, my friend Sue and I went out nursery shopping today and enjoyed a surprising afternoon of 70+ degrees. Quite a change from this morning's 28 degrees.

What I have is nerine bowenii. Yours must be a more robust variety - or you just have a greener thumb than I.

Our temperatures has been dipping just a tab below 32 on and off for about the last week. I had to string up some lights to keep my newly purchased kumquat from freezing, and decided to add another string and extend it out a little so that it looks like I got my act together and put up some Christmas lights. We only got to about 60 degrees today.

No, mine's bowdenii too. I've tried growing the other ones and they just disappear, or never appear to begin with. I suspect the gophers get them before they can even start coming up out of the ground. The N. bowdenii just happen to be planted in gopher-proof beds and containers.

Well. I am lucky in that there are no gophers in my area. So, I can't blame it on them.

I have the lighter one and the slightly darker one. I have collected the seeds on and off, but never got around to watching them to see if they sprouted or not. I really like them for cut flowers during November.

Love the nerines. I've never been able to have them survive in my garden. I will try buying more this year and amend the soil better.
I hate the cold!! My garden is black in many spots although I do still have a lot blooming and I should be really thankful that I do not get snow or have to stay inside and dream about gardening for 6 months of the year!
