How often do you get snow Trish? I don't imagine it's very often. It must be a real treat to your kids to look out the window and see a sight like that. It's beautiful.

Karen,

We haven't lived in this part of Texas for very long, so I can't speak from personal experience yet. From what we hear, we might get a light dusting once every year, and every 2-3 years we'll get a pretty good snow. Thus far, that's been our experience. The snow we do have lasts about a week, then that's it. Nothing like yours, I'm sure! You are right, it is a special treat.

How long have you lived on your farm Trish? I know it isn't very long.

Trust me "a good snow every few years" sounds wonderful to me. I've lived in Cincinnati for 34 years. The first few winters were brutal, then we had many years (maybe 20 years?) that were very mild with little snow. Now we've reverted back to a few severe winters buried in snow for months at a time again.

Interesting, I only recently learned of the "North Atlantic oscillation" and how it relates to world weather. It apparently goes in cycles and causes much of our weather, from hurricanes to cold winters and drought, such as your seeing, in different parts of the country, world. When I read of the cycles that have occurred, I can really correlate to the weather I've seen in my lifetime.

Some experts seem to dispel global warming theories with this argument. I need to read more about this, books on the subject are on my "must read someday" list.

We just celebrated our 2nd anniversary of living her. We were just down the road for the year and a half while our house was being built, and we farmed here during that time as well. Prior, we lived further south in TX.

Most Texans would agree with you that there are cycles to our weather. It is fairly pronounced down here. While we expect the years of drought, followed by the years of rain, it hasn't ever been as bad as this this year.

Interesting stuff, I agree!

That's a beautiful picture, Trish ! I would have thought it extremely rare for you to get any snow there whatsoever. Here we are in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, and where I am there is no snow on the ground at all right now, and none in the near future according to the Weather Channel. Okay with me for now, but once the temp really starts dropping we need the snow cover for insulation (of plants and water pipes, to name a couple of things). I'm in no hurry for it because once it gets here it won't go away until spring. Meanwhile, we're in the process of doing some remodeling on our house and everything is a mess! Finally got the tree put up and decorated today, but sure hope we don't get any unexpected house guests -- the spare bedroom is full of everything that has been displaced by the "project" .

This is our driveway in January 2009 --

Snow is too cold and depressing for this sunshine gal. Rolling on the floor laughing
I spent my first 16 years in Chicago and you couldn't drag me out of the sunshine again. Even though we do get a few days of cold and the occasional freeze, it doesn't last long. My joints ache just thinking about it. Hilarious!

This was Dec of 03. We are not used to this. Everything came to a screeching halt for several days, until the city and county could get roads cleared. Power was out everywhere. It was a really wet snow.
Thumb of 2011-12-22/valleylynn/00e723

We are just cold and dry right now. No snow, no rain. It will be down to about 21°F tonight.

We we finally got our decorations up. Tree in the living room, evergreen swag over the front room window and a manger scene on a table in the living room. First time in three years we have decorated. Sure feels good. Smiling

Happy Birthday baby Jesus. Hurray!
