This is something that has needed to be done for a couple of years due to tree roots and poor soil conditions. Also my double box was full of nut grass from a daylily I recieved and did not inspect the root system before planting it. Within two years the nut grass completly covered the box and there was no way I could kill it without killing the daylilies. I have rented one of those large dumpsters and all the soil and extra fans from that box will go to the land fill. I will only keep two fans of each double and make sure there are no nuts before replanting. The green box to the left is the doubles and will be moved over to the bed on the far right, the daylily bed to the right is the other bed to be redone with everything in boxes.

I have removed the daylilies from the bed and ready to move the double box after cleaning up the mess and leveling the ground
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/969e2b
Double box in place, ready to be leveled and filled with pinebark and sand.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/a7908a
Had to fill box now because I want be able to get the tractor to it after the other boxes are constructed.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/392583
Have layed out where I want the other boxes with plenty of room for walk ways.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/0f7abe
Bottom of the south box. 12 x 4 foot with a 40 x 39 inch dog leg.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/d5bc1f
All the bottoms are done on the three new boxes.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/2e237f
All the boxs are completed and the water system started. All will be painted the same color as the house within the next couple of days. Will add the fertlizer and lime, till everything and start putting the daylilies in today.
Thumb of 2011-12-18/spunky1/8a0c06
Have been working on this for almost a week, should have had Michele and Kim over here and I would have been finished in half the time. Will add more as I get more done.

Fred, that is a huge amount of work. Nicely planned out too.

I will look forward to seeing pics of it during bloom season.

Enjoy seeing pics of others gardens and planning, cause mine are not planned.

Mostly plantings where space is available, within reach of how far I can physically lug the
hose for watering. I should have started this hobby when I was a lot younger. Big Grin

Of course, hubby does all the heavy work. Bless him for that.

Fred, maybe you should have come helped us with that level on James' very unlevel ground!!!! My hybridizing beds are so whopperjawed (is that the way it's spelled?) because the ground wasn't level to begin with and wasn't going to get leveled. The daylilies won't care though. And once we are done and the daylily foliage covers it, you won't even be able to tell.

I can't wait to see your display area in bloom. Hurray! Hurray!

Just so you little elves know, he is adding the security around these beds as well. I was just on his website and looked at the map to his location (under contact and shipping). The security even shows up on the map (Edm security) Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I

Dang! I know a friend who is really good with electronics(security systems). I'd hate to have to hire him for such a trip, but, if you think Fred is getting around to this level of electronics(security) I guess he'll have to be invited.

Fred sure is doing a great job. You southern folks really know how to build up beds. Are these beds really up off the ground?? If so, why?

Mona, I believe the reason Fred does his beds off the ground for the most part is tree roots. It's also easier to weed and such since we have weed problems all year round. If I could do all of mine that way with bottoms I would. At my old place, the 2 beds I had in the hybridizing area had the bottoms and were off the ground. The ones now are just the wood frames with ground cover underneath.

Got everything tilled and ready to start putting the daylilies in, also finished the wartering system except for the electric wire from the valve to the automatic timer, need to dig a trench to bury the wire for this, the security cameras and motion sensors. Also have everything painted except for one box.
