Fred, Do you ;use overhead water systems. I'm going to have to do something with mine. I've been using an overhead spray that covers about a 8-10 foot circle. I have a lot of water spotting on my blooms and have thought that a pot level system would be best. Oh yes, I do grow my plants in pots. I'm in the process of redoing all of them, so now is the time to make changes if I'm going to. I know that these spray heads aren't going to last forever. I have steel pipe in the ground at about 4foot high with the spray heads inside these. I can just add more pipe at different locations and this would be the very easy way(driven in the ground by dh and a sledge hammer). I use a water hose attached to the spray heads and have to move the hoses to different locations as I water each area.

We;ve looked at some systems over the years so I know they aren't terribly expensive. What's your suggestion? Anyone or everyone???

Blessings Mona

Mona, what time of day do you water and are you sure they are water spots? I overhead water the way Fred does with the mister heads. During bloom season I water late afternoon. I used to think my blooms had water spots on them, but later figured out it was thrip damage. After I got rid of the thrips I didn't have those spots anymore.

Could be. I've seen these thing mentioned. I know I have some because I have seen their little bumps on the buds. But, I think some is water damage because of washed out looks.

Do happen to have Love After Dark? This plant is the worst I've got. In fact, I thought seriously about throwing it away. I've never thrown away a plant but it's terrble. I have never seen it bloom without looking like it has a serious case of dandruff on a dark velvet red bloom.

What do you use for thrips?

Blessings, Mona

In the beginning I used the Bayer Advanced complete insect killer. It was the one that you hook to the end of the hose and spray. But since I had spidermites and Fred gave me some Avid I used that. It's supposed to be good for Thrips as well.

No, I don't have Love After Dark, do you have a photo with the bad case of dandruff you could post?

I'm sure I have a newer one, but I didn't label it. Since it's not labeled, I can't find it right now. This one is bad enough!

That to me looks like a bad case of thrips. You may want to try spraying at the beginning of the season when everthing is greening up before scapes start. If I'm not mistaken, the thrips start doing their thing even before the scapes emerge. If you use a systemic like the Bayer Advanced you should only have to spray every 30 days. If you wait until after the blooms start and you see this damage you can spray and it should clear up things up on the smaller developing buds (usually). Sometimes the buds will not mature, will turn yellow, and will drop from the thrip damage

On the photo of Gossamer Parasol you will see water spots on two of the petal tips. This is the only photo I could find that I kept with water spots.

I wish I would have kept the photos of my thrip damage to show you.

OK, got me, I feel guilty for you having to ask. Of course you can. I actually have some more and if I can find them, Ill let you know.,

I've been looking for a photo of some bugs that I had early this year and dang it , I can not find them. I thought you might know it too. It's looks like some kind of small beetle. It's black and red. It was in one area of my garden and before I realized what had happened, they caused about all of my buds to abort on about 40 or more daylilies. The buds where fine, then wham. They quit growing, turned brown and died. I started spraying but it was too late for those. I did kill most of these little devils that I could find after this and luckly they were not one the ones that I was using for parents. I did get a few transfers from the old to the newer ones, but they met a very quick timely death. They are about half an inch long, raised legs our from they bodies and somewhere the red and black joins the body to the head. They are shaped kinda like a squash beetle but are a little skinnier and bigger. I looked every where trying to find out what they were. I'm a nut about not killing good bugs, but these darned things turned to be very bad bugs.

Mona does it look like this one?
These harlequin bugs can be very destructive in the veggie garden and i noticed a few on my daylily buds this year. I just picked them off and dunked them in soapy water, but I only had a few. If you get them bad the systemic you use for thrips would probably work on these too.
It's my cats world, I'm just here to open the cans.

I'm sorry Kim, I looked at your site but that's not it. It fits my description, but I forgot to mention that it's not so squat looking as that it's longer and skinnier. The one that Michele posted is it. Thanks anyway and blessings to you and yours, Mona

Mona, I kind of searched for it. When Kim posted hers (which looks like a type of stink bug) I searched for red and black stink bugs which led me to red and black seed bugs then something else. What I usually do instead of the web search is I do an image search. I find something similar if not the exact one and go from there. If you click on the photos it usually tells you what it is and what website the photo came from.

We do water overhead and have some water spotting, especially on the darker plants. You should not get a lot of water spouting from that mist system. During bloom before the water comes on in the afternoon I will put a plastic or styrofoam cup over the buds that will open the next morning if I think I might use the pollen. A lot of test will be cracked open the day before they bloom. I don't think I have ever seen a bud like that.
Got started replanting the daylilies yesterday, water system complete, security system in place.
I will put white lattice work around the bottom of the boxes to keep the armadillos from digging and also help the appearance.
