A seller can generally make more money selling two SF than he can selling one DF. I am sure that is why you see so many SF listed.

This past summer from the Lily Auction:

Crazy Ivan
Texas Blue Eyes
Bodacious Bite
Color Fusion
Never Been Kissed

This was the first time I have purchased single fans, so it will be fun to see how they do.

I live in zone 6. I am in KY but just north of Nashville,TN Sometimes we have a very mild winter, I am hoping for that again lol.

I have a few things listed on the LA now and most are DFs just a couple of SF.

When we first started buying daylilies on the Lily Auction, we got newer daylilies that were single fans. After a couple of years I noticed that these were the ones that struggled and sometimes croaked. The ones that came as double fans or better seemed to always thrive. The SFs were slow to increase, too. Abundantdaylilies is the only LA seller now that I will risk getting only a SF, and often times Mark will send more than a SF even when that is what is listed. We always have received large, healthy fans from Abundantdaylilies. I would rather pay a little more and get more than a SF or wait until the prices come down and buy more than a SF. Our summers are so hot and dry, and these conditions really stress a SF planted in early April. We are in zone 7 in NW Ga.

Thanks! This appears to be the place to be! There is little action on DG. Maybe I can add some pictures to the ATP Database.

I did a massive repotting of my pot grown plants this summer and fall. I can honestly say that sometimes it's easier to leave a plant as a double than it is to try to divide it. This will be the plants that grow attached to the crown of the mother plant.

When plants grow off a stolon they will divide into single fans easily, most of the time. I had many many plants that the single fan was so large that I had to only put one fan into a 3 gallon pot. It wouldn't hold 2 fans. I think that most of these huge fans will divide into two fans by next Spring.

I understand that most growers use the term for "Double Fan ie: db fan" as two fans attached to each other.

2 fans usually are single fans that grow seperately or can mean 2 that had been joined but were divided in the process of dividing the clump.

A single fan may or may not have been attached to another fan, but still means one fan.

I just went to the terms dictionary on the AHS site and could not verify this info, soooooo please correct me where I'm wrong. I'm new at the selling end of the daylily world and still have huge bunches to learn.

Blessings to all, Mona

I think for most sellers there is no hard rule for the terms. Best to send off a question to the seller to see their understanding of the terms they use. It would seem logical that Dbl fan would mean 2 attached ones but you never know. Shrug!

Doris, welcome. So glad you are here. I am finding this to be a wonderful place and so easy to get around. So many great people and willing to share info without trying to sell you something. With Tinkers gone for now I am hoping we can get the Database complete here and there are so many more options being added, you will be thrilled I hope.

Generally double fan means 2 fans attached whereas 2F means 2 single fans that divided naturally that way or was divided. For sellers that don't divide until they get ready to ship, they may not know if the fans are attached or not. I have seen them listed as DF/2F because of that very reason.

And for those who pot theirs up, unless they keep record of what was potted up as 2 single fans, they may not remember and list it as DF

This is just MHO

That is correct. When I list I always state one double fan or 2 single fans, depending on what I find when I dig. Some plants seem to have more attached fans than others.
