Oh, sure, I'm not planning to leave the veggies forum or anything. I just find that there are different considerations to starting 10,000 seeds or raising hundreds of pounds of onions.

And tomatoes, well, there's always Tomatoville.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

True Paul, though I've not been in T'Ville for a while. I seem to spend too much time there when I go. LOL

Definitely different considerations, perhaps you should approach Dave with a Market growers forum idea? He'd probably go for it, if you volunteered to help with it. Smiling

Have you read through the dense planting thread at T'ville? I thought it was so funny that what I've been doing for years is considered a "method" LOL

Dense planting definitely describes my methods. Of course, there's more than one type of 'dense'! Whistling

LOL True. I looked at your photo. Mine is more like the one described at T'ville. I start all my seeds on a plant stand with lights... so space is limited. I just throw seeds in an individual cell and label it. I was just amazed when I saw that thread... I thought, hey, I'm not the only one who is crazy. Smiling

It depends how many of a variety I'm starting. I can do up to 75 seeds in a row. I can easily do 150 in one of these containers:

I also sow up to 40 seeds in each square on the 1204 flats.

15 years of doing this and I still tweak the process every spring. All of them go into flats set on shelves with lighting. One 18"x48"x72" plant stand can reliably start 16000 tomato plants, which is more capacity than I've required so far. In practice, a little less than half of my seed starts are tomatoes.

I started 208 tomato and 65 bell plants in January, completely by accident, as I only grew 12 of them for myself! And, I didn't lose a single plant to damping off!!

Gave 'em all away to my friends who produced bumper crops this season. I had my best season ever, too! And, I discovered I actually like the challenge of starting seeds even better than actually growing the tomatoes.

Paul, I hear yah about "dense planting" and "space challenged!"

Here's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
