Becky Boo, I believe your red headed hummingbird was an Anna's hummer.

I had a surprise when looking out my patio doors this morning. There stood a bird I had never seen before. Smiling I grabbed the camera and the Audubon book ! Hilarious! It turned out I had a Ringed-neck Pheasant ! I have never seen one in this area before and certainly not by my patio ! Rolling on the floor laughing He later scared me as he flushed out from behind a pot, where he was hiding, in the area I was watering. He seems to be eating my pyracantha berries and my Poppy buds. ( not to happy about the poppy bud eating ) Still it is a nice treat to have him here.

Boy, he likes his intoxicants! (poppies are an opiate)

Lucky you! I had no idea they run around wild here. Does the Audubon book say they're found in Tucson area?

Thanks Margaret !

Susie the book says they trhrive in SW Canada and range in most of the western US., the grain belt, and the Northeast. However, the range map does not cover this area. My husband spoke to a hunter this morning that was totally shocked it was here. The bird has now cleaned out most of my pyracantha berries. It was a very small plant so I am kind of concerned what it will start on next ! It started making a lot of noises a while ago. Not sure what had upset it. It hides very well.

Odd. I hope it has some friends here and is not vacationing alone.

Not sure but I think you have to be a member of AZ Audubon to post a sighting. It would be interesting if others have seen them around the state.

I checked that site just a little while ago. Smiling So, I guess they are here. Does seem to be a well kept secret. The neighbors cat was just on the top of the fence eyeing the area the bird has been spending a lot of time in. Grumbling

The Pheasant and I are becoming old friends. My friend in Canada, Margaret, suggested I try feeding it frozen corn or peas since it had consumed all my pyracantha berries. Within minutes of putting the corn out he came and started eating it. He would take a couple nibbles, then hide, then return. I have now fed him over a half a cup. I am warming it up a bit. I was able to get a photo thru the window. Margaret cropped it and sharpened it up for me after I sent it to her and here it is. Green Grin!

He's such a beautiful bird. It's sort of like something you only see a photo of in National Geographic.
