Happy Birthday Debra. Once the Hellebores are established they are very hardy plants with good drought tolerance. Have you tried any with the double flowers? Also in case anyone does not know when the new growth starts you can prune away the old growth so that the new flowers are exposed.

Bob, I have a nursery, and mainly grow for sales. I have sold the Sunshine ones, quite a few of the Lady ones, and Pine Knot strain for the nursery, and some for my own garden, Onyx Odyssey, Green Ice, Green Gambler from the co-op. Pink Frost, a few of the Winter Jewels, Ivory Prince.

I really don't know much about growing them, other than they really are very easy. I had no problems at all in the nursery in pots, even overwintering them outside.

So, I'm happy to hear any advice you can give on growing them!

Just wandered in and got interested with the hellebore chat. I ordered Ivory Prince from MamaJack originally and it is a healthy plant. Was just talking to a friend that really wants a pink one. Thanks for posting the info, Debra. I hope you had a great BD! I have had hellebores in a dry shady bed for many years. They are tough. I was told they like leafy mulch.

Hi Anna!

They are tough. I know they can handle dry once established. Amazing. Victor, over on DG uses them as ground covers, and it's lovely where he has them.

Well, not too hot...still for long lasting blooms and green in winter, I can see how you can never have enough. The only "downside" is how they look down. Makes you want to plant them in a hanging basket to enjoy the blooms more.

I grow some in full sun. I water them more. So, I would expect morning sun would be great.

Polly I have not read any books on them , mostly internet research and talking to people at garden centers.

Anna for pink I would go with Cotton Candy or Peppermint Ice.

Evan I know that they are sold as shade plants , but that is because they do well in shade and in the south they need shade . But in the northern states they can take plenty of sun. I have some in my sun garden that get full sun most of the day and they are almost 3ft wide now. I find they do better with sun. They do not like to be crowded or to be kept wet this can lead to fungus problems.

Thanks, Bob. All input is welcome. From what I understand, they look even better with some sun. I am going to grow them in at least part sun since I have mostly sun here and little shade.

I'm happy Bob accepted my invitation to co-moderate since he has mostly shade. Great addition to the forum. Thumbs up
I garden for the pollinators.
