one note on the mini eucomis........you wont' find these anywhere in the u.s. yet i don't think. this is their trial year and are the creation of the new zealand hybridizer eddie welsh. i have one week ....ONE WEEK.....to say yay or nay on these. money won't be due till jan. and talk to susan if you need to but i have to know in one week if we want these or not. so if you have specific questions lmk because we can get info straight from mr. welsh if we need to.
Eucomis are hardy to around 5 degrees. Some of these will grow in zone 6b with mulch but mostly they need zone 7 or higher. However there is one dg'er in zone 6 that says she grows them without mulch or anything special. also note that some appear to be more hardy than others to cold so lmk if you don't find that info. and bonsaiguy reports that they grow even in zone 5 without a lot of fuss.
Bulbs/tubers can be either grown in pots in colder regions or dug in the fall and stored in a frost free location. Winter wetness is to be avoided so they need excellent drainage. And use low nitrogen fertilizer. One source recommended cactus fertilizer (5-10-5).
What i like about these is their long flowering time. In the garden they open over a 4 week period and will last 4 to 8 weeks as cut flowers. They need full sun but can take some shade. Too much shade will weaken stems and colors will be not be as vibrant. But one guy i found loved the look of shaded eucomis. the flower stems were elongated and twisted and he liked that look for cut flowers. The hotter you are the more shade they can tolerate as always.
Eddie Welsh says the dwarf eucomis will bloom about 12 weeks after planting if you plant in feb., 8 wks if in march and so on. the longer they are stored the sooner they'll bloom once you do plant them as the flower is formed while dormant. does that make sense to yall?
Standard size eucomis bloom in august/sept. in the garden. it may be that once planted the minis and the standards will all bloom at the same time but potted ones are blooming earlier. this year trials are being conducted in actual growing conditions so information will be more meaningful in years to come on the minis. Each bulb/tuber will produce one bloom so multiple plantings are recommended on all eucomis.
