Do you do anything special when starting Amaryllis? I like to put my roots into a bottle with warm water for several hours before planting. I then use a good quality potting soil try to get the roots down deep. i put in a little soil, wiggle the bulb, add more soil and continue doing that until the bulb is about 60% under the soil. Water sparingly until it is growing. I put a layer of gravel over the soil. It looks nice and keeps the moisture level more constant. Enjoy..
