I absolutely love this plant !! The bees and hummers are all over it and now it has berries for the birds also...which is why it's also called 'Pigeon Berry'. I've got it across the back of the garage and a couple out in front and am casting about for a few more spots to squeeze it in....It's getting crowded here....

Hmm. Looking for Pigeon berry I come up with either Phytolacca Americana, or Duranta erecta. Neither one looks like yours.

I'd not heard of it before moving up here, so it may be that it does not do well down there...gets biggish...6'x6'....becomes thicket-like in growth also, after 3 years I have some new growth around base to divide off and move....

Jer and I currently have differing opinions about the back side of the house.....

According to Sunset, it should thrive here, but is deciduous. It's the berries that concern me...the birds make enough mess in black and white. And then there is that space problem...

I have read that it should / could(?) be cut back to 4" each year.....mine have been in the ground 3 years and I've not cut them back and are not deciduous for me. I keep meaning to ask Bex if she cuts her back, will do that now....we had 100" of rain and many very frosty nights and mine were fine....

Ok. Sunset says will freeze back to the ground , but will recover. Neither of us need to worry about freezing. 6' x 6' would be pushing my very limited space, though due to my gardening area being on the north side, anything will stretch for the sun. It will take some thought to decide . I'm already pushing the limits.

Bex said she did cut hers back hard last year, but neglected to tell me about the years leading up to that...now I'm pretty darn sure that I would remember if mine had gone deciduous the last two years, but....I'm not going to cut mine back this year either and I will see what happens, I don't want to cut it back...the 'thicket forming' might be an issue for you...I don't mind cutting my suckers out... I have to figure out where to plant a Harlequin Glory Bower that allegedly should be planted where you can mow around it because it suckers so badly...it may stay in a tub....

lol...I'm out of room for everything, but I just told bex that I would take some Ninebark seedlings that she has...where will I put them? There are many things I can do without, but I'd really like to replace my Sweet Almond Bush / aloysia virgata, and 2-3 white flowered coleonemas, the leptospermum Dark Shadows, and a couple of other things, but there again, where will I put them?

I had room before, but not enough water...sigh...
