The leaves and flower are reminiscent of Cinnamomum zeylanicum. Not conclusive, though.

Wow, that is beautiful! My first thought was possibly a Clerodendrum of some sort, but the Ceylon Cinnamon Tree (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) sure looks like the plant in question!

Thanks Hetty and Lin, the only problem is that Cinnamon zeylanicum is not native to Brazil..unless it is an escape maybe from a garden.. Confused

It's a beautiful plant Myriam! Hetty has given the clue of Cinnamomum, I have checked locations of those listed but it seems the only one which fits is Cinnamomum verum which is listed but gives no location.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F...

http://www.dkimages.com/discov...

http://www.plantgenera.org/tax...

Photos on the next site don't show the leaves to bes so deeply ribbed, but they do have the same veins. The leaves look young.

http://herbaria.plants.ox.ac.u...

More mature leaves on the next link which look closer.. it's used as a herbal medicine so could easily have been grown and escaped.

http://botany.cz/cs/cinnamomum...

I wasn't convinced after finding most of the Cinnamomum species, so I checked the next genus up from it, Caryodaphnopsis inaequalis. I can't find that species but did find others which look suspiciously like it. It could still be Cinnamomum though, at least the veins seem to match that of Cinnamomum verum.

It is hard to say Janet, yes, the leaves and flowers do look the closest to Cinnamomum verum so far, but my leaves do look much bigger in relation to the flowers and are considerably deeper ribbed, but maybe that is because it possibly is a young plant..

On your Wiki link with the botanical painting it looks very much alike:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F...

But then this picture of Cinnamomum verum on this photo shows the leaves hardy ribbed and quite small Confused

http://www.dkimages.com/discov...

It is confusing, the leaves of mine also look less stiff in texture, broader and bigger, less leathery and the edges wave a little, the leaf point looks longer too and more flexible..

Caryodaphnopsis fosteri has indeed the similar veins but it still doesn't feel right..

Thanks for all the hard work! Smiling

I think it could be a Miconia sp.

I still have to look further though for a better match.. Rolling my eyes.

That looks more like it! There's an awfully long list of them though, it can be narrowed down by checking the location. Flickr is a good place to look.

Miconia centrodesma is very close but so many look similar!

Sighh... I know Janet, the list is hopelessly long..and so many look-a-likes, it think I'll stick with Miconia sp. Rolling my eyes.

I think it will be difficult to track down which one it is, Miconia calvescens is very similar except I don't think yours has purple leaf backs and are not as dark a green.

http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/...

http://www.invasive.org/weedcd...

It says on this site there's more than a thousand Miconia species!

I think Miconia sp. is good! Hilarious!
