I have noticed that a lot of lilies have been taken by certain (unnamed) growers and sold under their own given names to avoid paying royalties where due.
The photo of "Starburst" on the Thompson & Morgan site looks amazingly similar to Nymph. Friso, I have been told, is really Silk Road and there are many other examples. There is also the problem of people naming their plants without checking the Registry. There were some beautiful lilies at the show in Burlington last year that had been entered by their hybridizers that were passed over because they had been named the same as another registered plant. The entire registry is not accessible by everyone and I have noticed that the online site is now looking for a new host and no longer fully functioning.

The 2nd supplement to the International Lily Register and Checklist 2007 has Robert Griesbach as the hybridizer of Friso. So he would be the person to ask whether he really is the hybridizer or did the dutch do a flim flam.

If my memory serves me correctly they just list him as the hybridizer but don't list parentage.

Mags, yes.

Bearsearch, correct, and parentage isn't listed for Silk Road in the register either.

Working on the database here I have lieterally spent hours digging through the registers and found that it is not uncommon for parentage to not be listed. Sometimes seedling parent numbers are listed.

That would make sense as there are many hybrids produced from unnamed unregistered plants that go on to become registered plants. I wonder why though as in the orchid world you MUST have the names of the cross not just numbers.

Oriental Lily 'Hotline'. I just purchased 'Hotline' and the images I'm finding from other vendors match https://store.brentandbeckysbu.... Our DB shows a different Lily Lily (Lilium 'Hotline')

Help!

Unfortunately it is not a registered lily with a description. A google image search though turns up only the upfacing white Oriental lily with a pink edge.

The one in the data base looks more like 'Arena'. However, it is not at all unusual for multiple cultivars to have the same name and not be registered.

A mix up there somewhere, probably with pictures. Hard to believe chocolatemoose would have bought a Hotline and then posted it if she hadn't bought it under that name to start with. Sometimes stock photos are in error, too. Take the case of both Trebbiano and Courier; that stock photo used to market both has been used by many sources interchangably. Yet there's a big difference. This kind of stuff just adds to the confussion. Maybe Ramona (Mainiac) will have the true answer--I'm sure she must have personally seen the real one.

I have to agree with what Rick (Leftwood) said in another thread about naming things-- about going down the road of hostas with a change a little here, a little there, and back again, that we don't end up with a million cultivars that you can't tell apart and you lose sight of the original. Stargazer has a couple dozen variations out there. But at least they were never given names. Now, it seems to be in style to rename anything and call it 'brand new'. Dollars invested and marketing have a lot to do with that I think. But, its a shame.

Connie, who does the Lily register? This time I'll bookmark it.

I'm honestly not sure what to think of the duplicate names, "unregistered" plants and minor tweaks to existing cvs. I don't have the experience to know or appreciate the historical context of all this. If Lilies are like Iris, orchids or daffodils then there is a generally accepted registering mechanism and authority. But as long as the Dutch decide to go there own way and in the case of JI, the Japanese are an independent authority in there own right, this will always happen and get worse as time goes by. I also appreciate retailers wanting something new to sell even when it's not improved. What I really appreciate though is the hybridizers like you folks who seem to be motivated by the genuine improvement of cvs. and not just by the flash of the great photo op. Thanks.

The RHS is the authority for liliums. On Line Register is here:

http://www.lilyregister.com/

Register supplements are on the RHS site in PDF form.

Often the duplicate names represent lilies in different divisions. Sometimes a lily will go into the register but there will be a disclaimer that the name (epithet) is unacceptable because the name is already in use. Co-op lilies tend to generate a lot of misnamed lilies but the buyers don't know that. That is why we have moderators here, but the job gets tough sometimes. Then as you say, there are the Dutch. Shrug! .
