A How-To Guide for Propagating Bromeliads

By SongofJoy

When it comes to separating a bromeliad offset, often called a pup, from the mother plant, many people develop a case of "separation anxiety." I know I did. While it isn't terribly difficult to do, there are some basic guidelines to follow in order to achieve success.

Mine are all at the bottom sides of the main/mother plants. Or are you talking about just the Orthophytum? I do not have any Orthophytums at this time so don't know about those, in particular.

I was referring to Charleen's Orthophytum. She had asked if if would have babies. The pups form below the inflorescences, on the bloom stalk.

Thanks. Glad you posted that info, Sandi I do not have any of those so that is good information to know and pass along. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't confused. Sticking tongue out

Orthophytums produce pups below the blooms on the bloom stalk. Thumbs up

Those growing up from the pot are baby plants, Charleen, and are removed as described in the article. Apparently, your Orthophytum also produces babies from the bloom stalk much like a pineapple does. They are also bromeliads. So they are all babies. Looks like you will have quite a few! Lucky you! Green Grin!

Charleen, I think it's most likely Orthophytum gurkenii from what I can see in the picture. I am not absolutely certain. Sandi or someone else might know for sure.

I think you've finally given me the courage to separate mine from its pups! One has two pups that are roughly the same size of the mother plant, and the other has four pups of varying size. I think a couple of them can be separated easily but I'll leave the other two for a bit to grow a bit more.

THANK YOU! Excellent article. Hurray!

Well, the two pup one is just a small Red. The other is...I think....Guzmania Rauhinia(sp?). I have a picture of it somewhere that I need to find when it was in bloom.

Wonderful article! Unfortunately I have lousy experience growing bromeliads, well except for the tillandsia..I had a Guzmania bromeliad early last year, it did manage to create pups as the mom gradually declined. However, I had to leave and give the caring chores to my hubby, and it did not pan out...too bad..so off to bromeliad heaven it went...

Here's her photo then...but thanks a lot for the article, it may inspire me to try again a second time come spring Big Grin

Lovely Bromeliad, tarev. I have not had one with a bloom like that. I like it. I hope you have good success when you try again. Thumbs up

This is my favorite Tillandsia. It doesn't usually reside in the chair. Green Grin!

Yes it was a beauty. Tee, it has very little chorophyll from it's white appearance but it looks like a bow laying there..
