A friend called this Spiraea, but after doing a search I'm thinking not. It gets small white flowers in spring

Ugh - looks like whatchamacallit to me.... gosh darn it, where's my brain? It's pretty invasive - the birds love those berries and it'll grow in shady conditions, so it's all over our woods.

Privet! That's it, privet hedge!

hmmmm...will have to look that up. Here it is growing in a shady spot as well as sun. Looks more like "a wild child" then a hedge. I'll get a pic of the whole thing tomorrow...too dark now.

It certainly looks like Privet, possibly Forestiera segregata:

Well that's good - looks like it could be an indigenous species for you?

The 'hedge' part comes in because it can be formed that way - with pruning it is much thicker. We had them in Michigan when I was a child - I loved the scent of the spring bloom.

I do believe you and Janet are correct. And looking at Janet's second link it seems I've gotten 2 IDs for the "price" of one Whistling sinense which is posted and in another part of the yard lucidum. This pic is of the whole sinense. Will get pics of the other as well. Once again, thanks ya'll I tip my hat to you. I tip my hat to you.
