I have a few baggies that will be ready for their cold period in the refrig. Last time I tried germinating Hypogeal seeds I remember that after I placed them in the vegetable bin, any baggy that was touching or near the sides of the bin froze part of the soil. I purchased a temperature guage and it reads 39 degrees. If I lined the bin in a towell do you think it might help? Any suggestions.

See if you can scrounge around for some thin sheets of styrofoam, say 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick that you can line the sides of the bin with. Otherwise, use a towel. Or use a towel in the meantime. I had this problem with one of those small refrigerators I purchased just for plants, bulbs etc. Except the whole inside of the fridge would freeze even on the warmest setting. I put a sheet of styrofoam just under the freezer and that seemed to do the trick.

I also think wood would work just as well.

Or you could place the towel on the exterior of the bin on the offending side.
(Gee, I don't think you can think more outside the box than that! )

I'd also try a second thermometer. It's hard believe that temperature could vary that much in a little veggie bin.

For plant materials, I actually like that my fridge is a little inconsistent. All plants that use a cold dormancy system where natural temps go to freezing or below have some sort of antifreeze inherent in them. Species that have a tendency to start growing in the fridge when "their time is up" would benefit with 31F.

If you get that much humidity/moisture in you refrigerator that's another problem altogether.
