Time to Winter Sow Your Seeds

Have you tried winter sowing vegetable and ornamental plant seeds? If not, give it a try this winter. Many seeds, including tomato seeds and your favorite perennial seeds, do unbelievably well using this method.

Rolling on the floor laughing Sorry Marilyn and Joanne.

Start the semp seeds right away. The milk jug method works the best, because it keeps the moisture level just right. Be sure to moisten the potting mix before sowing the seeds. I can't wait to see your new semp babies when the germinate.

Rather than milk jugs, has anyone tried plastic totes for winter sowing as flats? I was thinking of taking clear tote container and filling 6" mix then inserting dividers to section off "pots". Sow seeds in each "pot" and put clear lid on with a little ventilation. Once the seedlings are large enough, they should be easy to transplant without tangled roots since they are divided. Your thoughts? Glare

That sure sounds like it should work. You would need to put holes in the bottom of the container so it will drain well, and I put holes in the lid of the tote, it provided self watering (rain) and some air circulations.
Take photos and keep a progress report for us, it sounds very interesting. Hurray!

Yes, I use both milk jugs and clear plastic totes. The plastic totes are shoe box size and the next size up. they work great for me. However, the plastic does become brittle from the freezes and I have to be careful to lift them from the bottom. Most only last two seasons but I do have a couple that are on season three. I used a sodering iron to poke holes in the bottoms and tops. Do this in a well ventilated area!!

Here are some waiting to be sown tomorrow

Mostly various low growing dianthus (for some reason I am OBSESSED with them this year), aubrieta, Anchusa, Gentiana, Geum, and maybe amaranthus if I can fit it.
