Newspaper as Mulch

Inexpensive weed block: I use newspapers as a free source of material to block weeds once my tomato plants are in the ground. Over the growing season the newspaper is converted to wonderful compost by a combination of water, soil contact, and worms.

Just the other day, I decided I'm going to go ahead and Roundup most of the lawn.
Nothing but the bulbs have sprouted yet and I can avoid hitting them.
The grass has encroached into the flowerbeds and I need to kill it there, so I think I'll just do the whole thing....

I don't like Roundup, but I'm not above it when I need to get rid of something that fights too hard to do by hand.
Like jaggers.
Or grass.

Sorry - that's Pittsburghese for things with thorns.
There's one horrible weed here that has massive roots that don't come out when you pull the thorny weed.
That's what I keep Roundup on hand for.
