Mary, today we went to a daylily meeting in middle Ga. (near Warner Robins, a 2 1/2 hour drive one way) where Ted and Susan Petit were showing their program. It was great! They brought a 2012 Introduction and 19 recent intros for auction. What fun!!! We came home with three:

Prince Of Virtue
Pebble In A Pond
So Many Ripples

Daylily clubs are a great way to meet other daylily people and daylily hybridizers. We had a covered dish meal, and everyone got a door prize. (Everyone brings a door prize and dish to each meeting at this daylily club.) Daylily people are among some of the nicest that you will ever meet. I was talking to one lady who asked me how long it had taken us to get there, and she told me how long she had driven to the meeting. I asked her where she came from. She came from my home town, and I went all through school with her son-in-law! You just never know who you will meet at these meetings. Give a daylily club or two a try and see how you like them. You are under no obligation to do anything, but you might just find yourself wanting to get involved.

Enabling's not a bad thing, Green Grin! and I *do* need to get out more, and meet more people in real life before I turn into a hermit or something.... now, if I could just this damn shyness better... (do great online, not so much in a crowd of strangers)

Me, either, Mary. When I was six or seven, Mom had a joint birthday for my sister and me. I hid in the closet because there were too many people in the house. Sticking tongue out Had to learn to fake it when I was working with customer service, making presentations, and such. But I can hermit all I want now. Smiling Think it helps to have a group of people who all have the same interest as you. From what I understand of the Daylily meetings, all you have to do is show up and someone will start talking to YOU and then someone else will and then you start to feel more comfortable and then, away we go...

I'm a technical trainer by trade, so I fake it really well. Hilarious! I can walk into a classroom and take charge with no problem. Or strangers one on one, no problem. Shoot, I spend 2-3 hours/month talking to total strangers who walk by our recruiting booth. But put me in an unfamiliar setting with strangers? Thumbs down Proverbial wallflower.

I guess I need to meet Doris in real life before the next meeting -- guess maybe I should treemail her about that. Whistling

Hi Mary,

lovemyhouse said, "From what I understand of the Daylily meetings, all you have to do is show up and someone will start talking to YOU and then someone else will and then you start to feel more comfortable and then, away we go..." She is right. The meetings are structured with a program and some business to be conducted. There will be a short refreshment break. If you come to next Saturday's NWGDS meeting in Cartersville, you will learn about how to grow daylilies. This small club added 12 new members in 2011 with most of these being master gardeners and new to daylilies. We are still getting to know each other with so many new members. We will be structuring some of our programs to them. You may find this helpful. If you come to the Cobb County meeting which is Feb. 12, you will be laughing a lot. The speakers are Don and Nancy Eller, hybridizers from S. Ga. http://donellerdaylilies.com/b... Don is a HOOT! He chooses names for his daylilies that have "duck" or duck related words in the name (Duck's Dark Side, Wise Quaker, etc.) because his nickname in school was "Duck". The founders of the Cobb County club are Bill and Diana Waldrop of Kennesaw Mountain Daylily Garden. http://kennesawmountaindaylily... Bill was a lawyer and loves to talk. We get tickled at him because his wife has to tell him to quit talking. We went to our first CCDS meeting a few years ago when hybridizer Larry Grace was speaking. We were very impressed with how friendly everyone was. We have made lots of new daylily friends there. Each club has meetings to promote fun and fellowship. Both clubs have added reward/incentive programs to give points to members for attending meetings and doing anything that helps the club. These points can later be redeemed for daylilies! There is so much that I can tell you but hope you will come to both meetings to see how it all works and how you like it. If you have time to meet for lunch one day, I can probably work that into my schedule and meet you somewhere in Canton.

I used to be shy, even though I was a high school teacher for 10 years. I was comfortable in front of a classroom of students. I still consider myself to be an introvert by nature but have outgrown my shyness. Sometimes I need to keep my mouth shut when I say more than I should. The NWGDS was our first daylily club. We did not get very involved for the first couple of years, just attending the meetings and helping with the daylily shows. Since then, we have taken more active rolls with each of us being an officer. I am the treasurer and David is the secretary. We go to lots of Region 5 meetings (Ga. is Region 5 of the AHS) and bring back new ideas for the club to try. We have seen the club grow and members having more fun. Can you tell that we like to have fun at these meetings? If it is not fun and people do not feel welcome, who is going to come back? I did not tell you about getting free daylilies and being able to buy really nice daylilies for great prices!

Also, both clubs share members who are also from Cherokee County. Two live around Buffington/Macedonia and a couple more live between Cartersville and Canton.

Doris

All these shy people. Whoda thunk it? And so many with such public type jobs. Wow!

Me, I'll talk to anyone, anytime. I talk to complete strangers in restaurants, stores, anywhere. I like saying Hi! But maybe they are shy too. I often get these looks like I just touched them with a cattle prod. Hilarious! They say a word or two & then mums the word again. I just thought they were weird --- maybe they're just shy.
Then sometimes the other people are like me & we strike up a conversation.

I have absolutely no problem striking up a conversation with someone while waiting in line, or chatting with the cashier, etc. It's *groups* of people that give me the deer-in-the-headlights feeling. More specifically, groups of strangers. Especially in an unfamiliar setting

I am odd I guess as feel very comfortable and can talk your head off if I am comfortable but if I am not I can clam up and stay that way. Thank goodness I feel comfortable most of the time. I think my problem is gatherings that are on the formal side. I am a very down home informal type girl. Never could do the ball gowns and a lot of glitz, or fancy evening clothes and jewelry you know I could never afford. Love it on others but I feel like I am so out of my realm I can only think everyone sees me as a Super Geek.
