Barbara, you will need to post photos. I've never seen a million petunias. Perhaps you can qualify for the Guiness Book of World Records?

My shelves are full of coleus. I have a coleus order coming from Rosy Dawn in spring. What was I thinking? Most of the seeds I've yet to sow are going to have to be wintersown for lack of space inside. I do believe the tomato plants end up healthier that way, though. And the Yvonne's Salvia didn't get any taller for me when started inside. That no doubt is somewhat related to my wacko organic approach. I think to get the 6 foot salvia like Yvonne's and Emily's you have to use the high-test chemical ferts and I don't do that.

Of course my tomatoes are always 6 ft tall or more so go figure Rolling my eyes.

Linda I'm with you on the ProMix and I'm forced to use Miracle Gro but hate it. I'm still looking around for a Pro Mix source here at my new home.
btw one time I came across a seed starting formula from Pro Mix but I didn't care for it, I felt it was too fine and I got better results with their regular stuff

Molly, you might try stopping at local nurseries or garden center type places and ask what they use. Chances are you might find a good product that you'll like better than MG. That's how I found both Metro Mix and Fafard.

I've heard of Fafard but never found it where I lived. Certainly worth asking though in the past the answer was usually...Miracle Gro :-(

Molly,

These places had only Miracle Grow on display for sale to the customers. But when I asked what they use for their own seed starting and container plants they had something else. I asked if they'd sell me a bag of that. That's how I found both Fafard and Metro Mix.

Yes I understood what you meant. The places where I asked what they used for their own seedlings all swore they were using Miracle Gro (ugh). They might not have been telling the truth since they were selling MG but what can you do when that's what they say.

I was told by someone (not a commercial person) about Fafard but never found a source for it. I've never heard of the other one you mentioned.

Molly,

It's (Metro Mix) a Canadian product but used in the U.S. The formulation I get is Sunshine Metro Mix.

Got it Barbara and answered you. None of those are anywhere near me which may be why I haven't found it out my way.

Joanne,

I found a source for the pro-mix using your link! Thank you! They only have the BX... He says it is used for seedstarting. You use another one for your seeds and the BX for containers. DO you think I can use the BX for seeds?

I too love pro-mix... only problem for me is finding it at a good price.. last year the best price I could find for a bale was $86.00... I had Holly out in PA buy me a few bales and I picked them up at at DG roundup ... for almost 1/2 the price.. amazing I live in the "garden state"... and to get anything garden related costs twice as much

I was finally able to get some Metro-Mix 300 at a garden center about 60 miles from here--only place reasonably close I could find it. It was near where I was meeting a friend for lunch, so didn't mind the trip. And the price was reasonable. I came home with 3 of the 2.8 cu ft. bags (wish I had bought 4). It's just so much nicer to work with then MG.

Holy Smokes! I was paying $28./bale for Pro Mix in 2008 and Jan of 2009. I thought that was over priced then!!! This was in the Fingerlakes region in NY.

I pay $14 for 2.8 cu ft of MetroMix at a little local nursery.
