Is the design of a butterfly house specific? Are they size, length, height, color,
entrance specific ? Blinking Confused

I don't know for certain. Sheila probably will. I've had this one for awhile but not really sure any bfs ever used it ... and we have lots of bfs around here.

Did you mean a house to raise butterfly caterpillars in? If you're talking about a house for adult butterflies...well, instead of a butterfly 'house', I'd just include plants in the garden that butterflies like...the nectar plants and the host plants. With the nectar plants, you provide nectar for the adult butterfly. On the host plants, the butterflies might lay eggs, then the caterpillars feed on the host plant until it's ready to pupate.

There are lists of plants elsewhere on the forum you posted on.

I was inquiring about a BF hose like the one that Tee posted a pic of above. I have lots of nectar and host plants. I was thinking mostly the house could give them a place to overwinter in if needed.

I have honestly never seen one in my bf house but people tell me that they do use them. They also tell me that sometimes wasps build nests in them too and then the bfs won't go in (smart).

Something to consider if you're plagued with lots of wasps.

Stephanie.....Dale Clark said in a seminar on what bfs do in winter, basicallly not to waste money on them unless you wanted a decorative wasp nest.
If you want to encourage them, plant host plants they use.

Or display them or put them with decorative bird houses and such. I love my barn wood bf house but not for use by bfs. Green Grin!
