Now that I have seen how these lovelies bloom..such water hogs that they are.. Big Grin but really strikingly elegant once in bloom..next question now..so do I wait for all the blooms to wither altogether before I chop off the withered parts and the bloom stalk? Some of the blooms are fading now and I see the green lump forming for the seeds. I know with amaryllis this part is removed so the plant does not spend energy for seed formation. Is it the same with Hymenocallis?

Hi Tarev, enjoying your photos and the progress of your plants. I really like the photo documentary nature of it.

I did a little homework on names and it looks like the botanists have been at it. I'll use the Kew WCSPF as other sources agree with them in general. Here's what I've found. http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/named...

Correct name: Ismene × deflexa
A hybrid of I. longipetala × I. narcissiflora

Synonyms:
Hymenocallis × deflexa
Ismene × festalis
Hymenocallis × festalis

OK Tarev, I tried these 4 or 5 years ago but had no bloom. After looking at all your great photos and knowing jmorth can overwinter it in IL, nice pic Jack, I'll try again. Amazing blooms.

The only thing I can really say about these bulbs..they are really very very thirsty ones and they sure tolerate our hot hot days here..been having 98's here and as long as I have watered them well early, it does not seem to mind at all.
And to think I did not even give it any fertilizer or bulb booster thing when I planted it. Big Grin

It somehow gave me a cue on how to treat my amaryllis bulbs...I have some that I got from my aunt this Jan which I have brought outdoors, and seeing how the Ismene ones love water, I have been giving the amaryllis daily regular watering too, and saw marked improvements on the leaves. Now I understand what it likes Big Grin My first time to have them outdoors..so learning as I go.. Whistling So the warmer it gets, the more water they want.

Go for it Evan...it might give you much better yield 2nd time around!

Evan, mine are overwintered dry in their pots in basement. I usually repot every couple of years.

My flower show is now over! Just have the long leaves left, which looks nice as well Smiling Now we'll see how long it will last when the strong winds come back from time to time.

Yup! They are like sponges Green Grin! And you know I learned from it too..I realized my regular amaryllis bulbs must be equally deydrated..so I also increased their watering now that it has been warming up..and remarkable improvement..more leaves, bigger and longer! Hurray! Hurray! The things we learn along the way indeed Big Grin
