Bob, they can spread a lot so you'd better look for a big space. Smiling

Great, I'll be planting the creeping phlox tomorrow. It's expected to be 70 degrees! Blinking

I have one more question! Big Grin

I just bought some begonia bulbs at Costco. Definitely an impulse buy!

The label says Odorata, but what google shows does not match what's on the package. The package picture for Odorata Red and White similar to what UK websites show.

Here's an example:

Do you see how I fell in love? Lovey dubby

Anyway, do you know a common name for this plant? Also, how do I start this indoors?

TIA!

Hmm... that's what the US websites tell me, but the picture on the package is this:

Is this still sweet begonia?

I'd say your picture is a different plant. That's the thing about places like Costco- you can get great bargains, but you don't necessarily know what you're going to get.

You might try the ID forum, see what Janet and the other experts think. They're awfully good.

But they are so easy to pull (very shallow rooted) or trim. Definitely worth it, IMHO. Lovey dubby

I planted the garden phlox and autumn joy sedum in the ground. I kept thinking that they were probably unhappy in their pots and would prefer to be in the ground.

When can I transplant daylilies? Can I do it now? They were planted in a temporary spot last fall.

Daylilies are pretty tough. I planted several in very early spring here. I think you would be okay if you don't have more severe winter weather.

I agree

I move my daylilies around just about anytime the ground isn't frozen.

And if it does get really cold (without snow) you can always throw some straw or even some old sheets over them for the cold snap, as long as it's short lived. I did the straw for my daylilies when we went down to the mid 20's a couple of weeks ago, and they didn't even notice.
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

Great information here! Thumbs up A little late to "answer" but I agree with Tee about the Carex. One of my very favorites is Carex 'Evergold' Sedge (Carex oshimensis 'Evergold')

Ssgardener Our locations are similar so this Carex should work for you. I've got it planted in several spots, especially nice because it looks as good in deep shade as it does with a little more sun. It's not very tall but I love the bright variegation and the evergreen foliage looks as good in December as it does in July! I think if you could find something taller for the center of your containers it would look wonderful around the edges of the containers. Smiling

Re: 'Stoplight' - The photos of these always look wonderful but I have yet to see one in the gardens that looks as nice as the photos. I agree with Bob, with our heat and humidity, you're safer selecting one of the H. villosa cultivars.

Re: how early to plant? As long as the ground isn't frozen, the earlier the better! Again, I agree with Bob. I tip my hat to you. As long as the plants have been hardened off the plants are going to be much happier in the ground and their roots are going to get an early start when the soil starts warming up. One of the reasons we always promote fall planting, even as late as November! If you can get them into the ground before it freezes, it gives the plant an early jump on spring!
