Yeah, all the seedlings were pencil-size. All were healthy, it was my handling--or proper lack thereof--and the particularly brutal summer we had that lost most of them, so no complaints on that front. Of the seeds I bought, one set didn't germinate at all. I planted them out anyway hoping they are just reaaaaalllllyyyy slow in popping up. Hilarious! But the other three did well. Will be a good lesson in patience. Big Grin

I came back to this thread because it has some beautiful photos and good info.

Juli, When you plant your seed outside, do you sow them in a seed starting mix or just in your soil?

Do you cover them with something to prevent the rain from washing them away?( I left some seeds in the seed starting trays outside on a table under my huge old Oak tree one fall day, it rained!!! rained and rained!! I lost every seed that was in the trays 72 x 4. I only found about 20 on the ground, the rest vanished!)

How deep do you plant?

I think if you chill the seeds before planting, the seeds would try to come up in late fall and then die. I would think this is why you don't chill?? I have read on other sites that people collect their seeds and plant them all in the same day.I also have read that some in Southern states chill theirs before planting.

Do you leave the seedlings in this bed until they bloom??

I'm sure I'll think of something else, so please be patient. Thanks Mona

Mona, I put them in soil. My soil in that area is improved - not the nasty clay I have naturally. I just make a little trough with the edge of a board, and put the seeds in then pinch the dirt over them. I do know someone who covers them with sand instead of soil, and he thinks they don't heave as much. I know someone else who puts digs a whole in the ground, inserts a coffee can with the top and bottom removed, or a plastic pot with bottom removed. They put the soil into the pot, and then put seeds, with one cross per container. This makes it easy for them to get all the little seedlings out and transplant a bit easier. I never tried that method because I thought all those babies roots all wound up together - I would not have the patience to untangle them.

daylily said:Betty - that is not a seedling - well, I guess technically, it was for McNeil Carter at one time. That is Zazu Pitts. I don't know anyone else who grows it.

I grow it! Love it. Saw it a Curt's years ago. Can't set seed on it either!

wow, I need to take time to get all my seeds listed. I have been with my parents again and no computer there. So glad it is getting warmer! Be back soon.
