I own a 'Bichetii' Spider Plant. It is not the same species as the more well-known 'Spider Plant' which is Chlorophytum comosum; it's Cholorphytum laxum. They don't produce 'spiderettes' (babies) that C. comosum produces. It doesn't seem to get all that big either. I've had it for a few months now and while the root system keeps "exploding" on me (I've repotted it twice in those few months), it really hasn't gotten any bigger than it was at purchase. Here's a couple pictures of mine.

Welcome! Wow, that is one cute little spider. I love the bichetii because it is so tiny and dainty.
Your plants look really healthy. You must have the perfect spot for them. Thanks for sharing and when you make your list here on ATP don't forget to add this cutie.

JB,
Thanks! I have it placed in front of a South window where it has been receiving indirect sun. It has been blooming almost non-stop. I will make my list later today, I didn't realize there was an option for that (still navigating, there appears to be a lot to see!).

How do you propagate that one without plantlets growing on it? I just looked and I bought one a few days ago and it has not arrived yet. I also purchased an Ocean.

@Plantomaniac08

If you want to check out my list you are certainly welcome to do so. It might give you an idea of what they are like. Just click on the list at the left side of your screen home page and you will see the lists. Mine is under JB...I only have about 67 or so plants in there. I do not have a large variety since I only sell houseplants and I do not propagate many garden plants. enjoy.

Oh, that is a lovely little plant! I like the flowers being more tucked close to the plant like that. Maybe you have to wait for seeds to propagate? Or by division?

JB,
Mine (at least) has multiple plants in the pot. They appear to produce new plants from the underneath the soil and it fills up the pot over time. I believe they might be like Sanseveria (I've never split mine up), in that they may be connected somehow under the soil, but you can "pop" them apart. I actually have a "baby" forming on my 'Green Bonnie' Spider Plant that is emerging from the soil line. So in addition to "spiderettes", I guess it's possible to get a new plant from the more common 'Spider Plants' from the base of the plant as well. I hope this answers your question! I've never seen an 'Ocean' Spider Plant, I will have to look that one up!

Here us a great link with descriptions and pictures of different Spider Plants. My friend from the Atlanta Botanical Gardens sent it to me. Enjoy...

Woofie,
I am editing my post to reply to your comment that I apparently missed before. What's intersting about this 'Spider Plant' that I've observed is that the flower stalks get longer over time. Meaning, unlike the "shoots" that C. comosum that grow to a certain length and stop (at which point the baby forms), at the tip of each flower stalk on the 'Bichetii,' a flower blooms, dies, and the stem grows longer, only to produce another flower. The process repeats until the stems get long enough to stick out over the leaves. I hope that makes sense, I don't always have the best way of describing things.

JB,
Oh my... I have to confess, this forum is already enabling me! I wasn't aware that there were that many 'Spider Plant' cultivars. I have four cultivars and my MIL has a fifth one, but this is... Wow. ;)

Hee hee, ATP can be a dangerous place! "Enablers R Us!" Hilarious!
I do like that little plant, tho. And it's just fascinating to see all the different types that are out there. I had no idea.

The problem I have is that when you are looking for the different species, if you are not careful where you buy them, you do not get what you buy and some are so small there is no way to be sure. We just need to be on the lookout. At least now we have some guidelines to follow with pictures. I do want to get some different ones so we can begin to trade if we have extras.

JB,
That is very true. Some people who sell them don't know which specific one they're selling and others aren't always truthful (they know it's not a 'Hawaiian' for example, but sell it as one). I've only purchased 'Spider Plants' online on Etsy and thus far have had success with those. But, even Etsy has a seller or two I wouldn't think of purchasing from (bad reviews). This seller has gotten all perfect reviews, so I figured if I was going to take the chance ordering online for my first time, she seemed like the best "bet."

That is why I am sooooo careful about identifying mine because I sell on Etsy and eBay and I have 100% positive feedback out of 218. I only sell when I have extra's but I guarantee all my plants.
There are a few buyers I stay away from. I am also into streptocarpus and they are so beautiful. I am only learning about them. My Christmas/Holiday cactus are what I have the most. I have many of those and this year I started to sell the cuttings instead of the plants. It is easier, the customer gets more for their money and the shipping is cheaper.

I was going to say that as soon as I hit submit, I noticed you were on Etsy. I took a peak even though I don't have any room anymore... time to buy a house (one day)! I've had to stick my large Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' outside due to lack of space and I have no idea how I'm going to squeeze her and my two Pelargoniums (first year trying to grow them as perennials/houseplants) inside this winter. With only one window that's already full and the entire section in front of the window taken over, this winter will be fun to say the least lol.

Back on track now, I think that says a lot about you as a seller, you didn't just stick a name with it and hope for a quick sale. It sounds like you did your research and care about your customers. I'm not sure some sellers have that mentality, and that's sad. I know people are in the business to make money, but part of your business is built in making the customer happy and ensuring that they want to come back (because who knows, maybe down the road they'll want something else you're selling). Some sellers don't seem to do their research, just stick a name with a plant, and don't care how the plant arrives or how happy the customer is, they just made some money.

Actually, I never thought of selling my plants. I was a breeder of exotic birds before I moved here to this farm and retired from that business. I built a greenhouse and began to propagate plants when all of a sudden I was out of space. We have a Christmas Tree Farm and not much outside garden space, plus winters are nasty so I had to build the greenhouse because I love my plants. But when you get too many then it is time to clean out the greenhouse. I gave eBay a try and it worked.
I kept the prices down and learned how to pack them and I was back in business again. That was nearly 10 years ago. I sell when I feel like it. I did have to become a certified nursery here in the State of NJ in order to ship plants West of the Mississippi. I must have a State inspection of the greenhouse yearly but that is no big deal. Unless he finds insects...and he uses a magnifying glass on the plants (honest). Now I am really getting overstocked and am getting rid of all the starter plants of Holiday Cactus. I keep most of the bigger stock plants in the house for my own benefit. I love the fact they bloom from November to March and some are still blooming.
Then of course, there are the jasmine, spiders, goldfish plants, african violets and streptocarpus which I play around with. I try and keep my different plants to a minimum and usually do not propagate anything I can not sell. The spiders are really getting popular again that is how we got into this subject a few weeks ago. I am so glad we have you joining our little chat group.

JB,
I realize I had forgotten to look up "Streptocarpus" from your last post. I have seen a couple of those online (a number of AV growers tend to grow those too it looks like), but I've never seen one here in town before. They look furry, do they have hair? lol.

I understand, at that point when you're running out of space, you have to do something with the extras. Honestly, I only have one "girl friend," and she doesn't like plants, so if I was ever to become over-run, I don't know what I'd do... I might have to sell some plants myself!. My MIL has killed a couple of plants that I gave her (including my first Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen', the one outside right now is a replacement) and my Mother isn't into getting bombarded with plants. She has a 'Janet Craig' and a 'Marble Queen' Pothos and I think she's fine with that, no more lol. I know my MIL didn't mean to kill those plants, she just has a lot already as it is and she had nowhere to put them. She thought by covering them up outside, they'd be okay, but we had snow and an ice storm two weeks apart that killed practically everything. Even her 'Asparagus Ferns' that she's had longer than Hubby and I have been together didn't make it.

That doesn't sound like too much work, getting certified and having an annual inspection. I bet seeing him "inspecting" with the magnifying glass is a bit funny to watch though. I am not good with Thanksgiving Cacti. I've tried three and while the first one exploded with growth (sad story to that one), the other two just "sat" there for a year. Nothing. I think I keep them too wet, don't place them in the right potting mix, I'm not sure. I have given up, but I'm okay with that. I also can't grow Sansevieria ('Snake Plant') or ZZ Plants. I've wiped my hands clean and I grow what likes me lol.

Jasmine, those are the "smell good" plants right? I've seen 'Goldfish Plants' in town before, I love their flowers, but I've never tried one. I have two Optimara AVs that are blooming their heads off, I just love flowers.

Thanks, as you've noticed already I like to talk a lot (and I get off topic it seems). Nothing better than sharing your love of plants with other friendly people who also love plants. Green Grin!

Glasshouseworks has a variety of C. comosum, that they call 'Golden Glow', which they describe as having "vivid ochre and rich champagne tones". I wonder if that is the 'Hawaiian Spider Plant'?
