Good to hear, Mike. I wintersowed a jug of white swan, and I have about 7 or 8 little seedlings up. I do like coneflowers. I occasionally get a few volunteers, but not to the point of being a problem.

Terese, don't let me scare you off of these beautiful flowers. I don't know what it is about my soil, but I swear, any seeds that gets close to it, sprouts. Since I started wintersowing, I've had the same problem with melampodium, verbena bonariensis, and as much as I love Laura Bush petunias, it's on my "watch list" for this year. Most people grow these things with no problem. They're just a problem for me.

I love mellies, too, and I usually keep a few volunteers each year- just not as many as I used to, and I yank them early in fall before they have time to drop too many seeds.

It took me several years to get the tall, stately larkspur. It took me several years, but, boy, did I ever get it right! A garden friend on another forum told me to direct sow in fall. All of last year's larkspur were volunteers.

Last year was the first time I ever grew rose campion. When I saw how many seeds it produced, I could tell it would be a problem and I yanked it long before summer's end. Now I'm glad I did, because I have lots of volunteers anyway.

Karen

Mike -- I have yet to see Blue Angel in all it's glory... mine is still only about 4 leaves... this will be year 3.. should be the Leap year.

I'm heading up tomorrow to see how my Wisc hostas are doing.

I love White Swan. I purchased it from Springhill about 3-4 yrs ago... Bloomed the first year and has taken off ever since. I do not get a lot of volunteers... I know I've WS'ed them but not sure what i did with them... gave 'em away possibly.

I had a Blue Angel but it went to a friend in NY when I had to move Sad

I miss it. Gorgeous plant. Mike have you tried Hallson's's for one? They send great plants! http://www.perennialnursery.co... Blue Angel is $10.00 there. I've bought hundreds of dollars worth of hostas from him and he always sent me really nice big healthy plants and they won't be infected with the hosta virus X that they big box store plants have. I only bought one other perennial from him and that I wasn't lucky with but he refunded the money.

Good one, Mike! I have had zero luck with Paradoxa seeds over several seasons. What's up with that?! Love it, want it...gave up and went with Henry Eilers for the yellow.

That's a new one for me Mike. I was just getting into E's when I had to move so I don't have tons of experience with them. I do enjoy the other than usual colors and sizes.

How big across is that bloom? Looks large in that photo.

After my wintersown stuff blew over (see above) I re-sowed tomatoes in cups- 12 of them. Of that second batch, 6 have sprouted.

You can get seeds from (I went blank) (It is that big seed Co. in UK)
Then plant them in Nov., in WS jug, and you will have some by Apr., Then it takes three years before any flower, and you will feel like you are loosing them, until the second year, then they get going. Mike T&M, is the seed co.
Oh, and this is for E. Paradoxia.Worth the trouble, and don't water too much.
Don't you love my mind? Mike

Mike -- thanks for the offer on White Swan, but I already have a nice clump out back.

My Merlot Echineacia did not come back this year... I'm convinced that my neighbors dog killed it, along with the Agastache that was next to it. For some reason, it was one of his favorite "pee" spots.

Here we go with the wind again. We have another tornado watch until 9p.m. I had some cuttings in yogurt cups out on the porch to harden off. I had to bring them in again- they're blowing away. One got blown out of the coir. Potting mix holding up much better.
