Wow, Allison, that is a great way to keep track. How did you get the seed-packet photos to download?

Petunias tend to tolerate frost very well. It's one annual I usually do in winter. I'm just slow this year. And petunias are slow growers, especially outside.

Also, these were just a few pelleted seeds (shock wave) left from last year. Other wintersowers have told me that pelleted seeds tend to rot if put out in cold wet soil. I've not seen that but others have. But pellets do tend to sprout more slowly and I have had large seeds, like 4 o'clocks rot in the cold wet soil when sown too early.

We seem to be out of the deep freeze at long last (temps in the forecast in the 50s!) but rain most of the week.

I'll show my jugs later when I get my computer's hard drive cleaned off, but I'm using almost exclusively 2-liter soda bottles. Last year I used lots of gallon milk jugs and they worked, but found that I like the soda bottles better, no reason. I've also taped 2 clear CD carousel lids together and used them as a container. I'm poking holes with an ice pick and it does as well as the drill I was using. It's faster and easier than hauling out the drill and the bit tended to skid around on the plastic, too. Makes about a 1/4" hole.

Lots of great info here and I'm way impressed by how organized and methodic y'all are. I have to admit I'm a lazy gardener, passionate but lazy. If it's too involved, I'm probably not going to do it. Plus, I still work full time (who doesn't?) and have limited time available for my gardening, so I want to make the most of what I have. Add in the fact that I'm now 67 years old (yes old, not young), and you get the picture. Oh, I'm counting the months until I can retire!

YAY Steven! I had to laugh this morning. My next door neighbor and I were at a MG meeting in January, and because she has a perfect view into my yard, I warned her I was setting out some winter sowing jugs out in the next day or two. She had never heard of winter sowing, so I told her the basics, and sent her to wintersown.org for more information. She decided to try 2 jugs with poppies. Today, as I was out filling the bird feeders, she came running over to the fence with one of her jugs that had sprouted and was so excited. She exclaimed "I'm hooked on this now!" Another convert Hurray!

Congrats on the Poppy sprouts y'all! Gotta love those early ones, they are such beacons of hope at the end of a long winter.

I've got sprouts in a couple of containers this week, English Wallflowers and Sweet William. The mild temps are supposed continue here for a few days, so I'll be out there every day looking for new babies!

Hoooray for the new convert! Now she just needs to come join Cubits and there will be no escaping!

My poppy that sprouted was Venus so thats 1 out of 5 different poppies. I usually don't sow that many of one type of plant but my ability to say "no" this year seems to be non-exsistent!
