I used miracle grow potting soil. Had 6 drainage slits in each jug. Mix was about 2" deep. The stuff that germinated did OK but didn't get much germination. I had to move the jugs to the ground next to my SFG bed because the wind blew them off the table. I made a "bed" for the jugs with bricks. I left the tops off and the snow and rain watered them. After stuff sprouted I watered it if it looked dry.

Chery--did you use Miracle Grow Potting Soil, or Potting Mix? It would be best to use a soil-less mixture for your WS (for example, something peat based). You might want to see if you can make the potting mix a little higher--closer to 3" than 2".

Did you remove the tape to pop open the lids as the weather warmed?

Possibly when the wind blew your jugs around, the seeds got planted too deeply to germinate. I have to put mine into cardboard boxes from the start so they don't blow around in the winter wind.

Sorry for all of the questions....just trying to help you pin down what might have went wrong. Hope you'll try it again this year!
