Greetings all! I am new to All Things Plants. I am planning three small permaculture beds and I am hoping to get some suggestions for perennial vegetables for Zone 7a (Jersey Shore). Thanks!

Welcome! Wow, that is a good question. I am also zone 7a but doubtful that our weather is exactly like yours. Some perennial veggies here are asparagus, rhubarb, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, some leeks, bronze fennel, shallots, sorrel, horseradish (herb). There is a winter hardy kale that grows in Europe that I'm trying to locate.

Some others I've heard about but not grown so can't vouch for are: lovage, Good King Henry greens, salsify, sea kale (Crambe maritima).

You might also post this question in the Vegetables Forum. But I hope we get some more responses here. Green Grin!

Hi Bob do not know if you are into getting a book on the subject , but I saw this. I also think that Radicchio is Perennial and some Artichokes should be in zone 7.

Just went back and added fennel to my list. How in the world did I forget that?? I'm a fennel fanatic ... use the seeds in everything too. Even have fennel-flavored toothpaste. Green Grin!

Hi BobbyG, welcome!!!

Fennel flavored tooth paste. Wow.

Parsley, of all things, seems to be hardy here. I know, an herb. But a good one for much more than a garnish.

And strawberries are a fruit, of course, but another good perennial. They spread, too.

Have you heard about mushroom logs? Especially good for foodies. http://www.veggiegardeningtips...

Yes, there are lots of fruits.

Parsley is a biennial, isn't it? I hope mine makes it through the teens temps last night and tonight. Sigh! Glare

Yes, as far as I know parsley is a biennial. I've grow it in the ground but a few years ago I grew some in a pot. I kept in on my deck in summer and moved it inside under lights in winter. It was nice to always have fresh parsley for cooking.

And this is another perennial kale. Some of these plants in Europe are reported to be 40 years old!

Probably is a biennial, I have only been overwintering it this year, so....
