Display means plants in the garden, rather than lined out is a row which is done in irises as they are easier to work at hybridizing if in a line where you can get at them. also 'display' irises are not encouraged to form seed pods. Long sentance, sorry! Big Grin

Thanks Lucy, I never thought of seed pods. They are kind of ugly, Do you whack them off?

A display garden is registered with the American Iris Society as such, and you can go there and look at the irises. Most have dates and times, so check before you go.

I found one in my city last spring/early summer but I just missed it. Wow, only ten minutes away. Hoping to see my own bloom next year and I will be happy. Green Grin!

I have an iris that isn't in the database but I don't feel I have all the background info needed to add it on my own. It is listed in the iris wiki and was on Dave's Garden. It is a Schreiner iris called My Oh My. Peach standards with white falls. Can one of you gurus add it for me? Thanks much - Leslie

Leslie -- you don't need all of the information to add it to the database -- just add what you can. A picture would be nice. Smiling Also -- if you're the one who first introduces it into the database, you earn an acorn!!

It's already in the database here:

Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'My Oh My')

One of the quirks of the search engine here is that it ignores words that are less than three letters long (this allows search results to be generated much faster, which is important in a database this large).

But, there are few plants, Like 'My Oh My' that don't have any three letter or longer words in their name. 'Az Ap' is another.

The best way to find those is to go to the Iris Database page and click "Browse the full list of irises". All 65,000+ irises will be listed alphabetically there, kind of like flipping through an encyclopedia. It's not the most efficient way to find something but, on the other hand, there are very few irises that have names like that.

Thanks Kent. I search as My Oh My iris, and iris My Oh My and was really surprised that it didn't show up. Did not know about the less than 3 letter issue. Always something to learn here! Smiling

My pleasure.

I've mentioned this before, but perhaps it's worth mentioning again. (hopefully people haven't read it so many times they are getting tired of it Smiling )

Any iris registered in 2013 or before (back to when registration began in the 1920's) is almost certain to be in the database here are ATP. Some irises registered in 2014 are not in the database, for the simple reason that the American Iris Society hasn't released that information yet. All of the 2014 irises currently in the database were added by members. Dave will get the rest of them when AIS updates its registry, probably sometime next spring.

I can't say we have 100% of registered irises (not counting 2014 irises obviously) in the database because, once in a blue moon, someone find one that is inexplicably missing, But, I'm confident at least 99% are already here, probably 99.9%. We do have some duplicate entries, mostly related to some weirdness in how AIS handled the registry in 1930's, that are steadily being rooted out. There are also some unregistered varieties in the database. But, by definition, it's impossible to have a comprehensive list of those.

Anyway, to make a long story short, if you can't find an iris in the database (and it was registered prior to 2014) it's probably due to a spelling issue or a quirk with how the search engine works. The iris is almost certainly there, it's just a matter of understanding how to find it.

Instead of browsing the full list of irises, you could also Google "my oh my iris all things plants" (or "my oh my iris allthingsplants"). It will pop right up in your search.

White Iris - more than 24 inches tall - blooming about 4 to 5 feet away from last year location .. this Garden was Inherited with out home, so last year digitally documented all of it.

I'm having a hard time searching with the database.. I entered "Tall Bearded", "Red", "Copper/Brown", and "Rose" and got 14 Iris.. Now I'm sure there must be more than 14 Iris that fall into those colors. I also tried Red, TB, and tailored and came up with nothing.. I must be doing something wrong, but I've never been able to get it to work when I've just been searching out a color.. Help.

The search engine does what you might call "AND searches" where it tries to find entries that match every parameter you check. If you enter "Tall Bearded", "Red", "Copper/Brown", and "Rose" it will look for tall bearded irises that have ALL THREE boxes checked for Red, Copper/Brown, and Rose. In other words, it thinks you are looking for a flower has that has red, brown, AND rose markings. It does not understand you are looking for any iris with red, brown, OR rose colored flowers.

A couple of other notes about the Iris Database. Most of the information in there was imported directly from the AIS Check List, but descriptions of flower color were among the few things we couldn't get (formatting of the Check List changed enough over time that it was impossible for Dave's program to reliably sort it out) so it all had to be added manually. I'd guess we are about 25% done at the moment. Lastly, relatively few bearded irises are really even close to red, even when they are described as such. You'll have more luck finding "red" irises by checking the box for "Wine" instead of the box for "Red".
