I have used the mini blinds for years I got two large blinds from Goodwill for two dollars I am still using them, those slats go a long way when cut up, and the perma mark pens stay on.

KAREOKE,
Thanks for the Goodwill tip! I just scored a brand new set of white vinyl mini blinds from the thrift store down the street for $5.95! looks like a lifetime supply in that box!

Ya'll know what I'll be doing this weekend, besides sowing seeds?

Linda
I tip my hat to you.

CapeCodGardener said:This has been a MOST informative thread. Thanks for the websites about the p-touch labelers. I'm thinking that if I go to Staples, for instance, I'll be abloe see some of these up close and personal--and see if they would work with my Mac computer.

My mom has one that I had from her for a little too long once so she got me one that I got to choose

Hers CAN be plugged into a computer I forget if it was xp or vista that she had it hooked to but it was the same USB plug as my hp 2575 printer (not new but perfect for me) in the back the computer then told it what to print and it would automatically print and cut it (hers isn't infront of me so I cant get the model number)

Mine is a pt-2030 the only line that can go out from it is a power cord that wasn't included mine was baught at office max (my mom baught me another then I decided to go back and get this one) there is a slightly nicer one avalable but this for the price seemed the best for me it has standard prints (like fragile handle with care do not open till specified --MANY! and in 5 languages too which I liked) it also has like 15+ frame types and about 3 fonts tho if you go too small it wont print the right font mine I have to manually cut the tape which can get annoying telling it not to pull out more so I can cut some tape and waste more tape (that seriously bugs me about it)

BOTH of them have frames and fonts they just vary by the model they both can also go up to .7" tz tape (it was "decided" by my mom that mine should take the same tape as hers it was just an extra plus that those are the nicer ones) you can tell both of them you want the print to be like 2" per or 5" per or possibly 1/4" per (note frames don't do well with the smaller)

Good luck picking one out there avalable at sams club and office max at minimum sans club sells the labeler at 30 bucks and 3 packs of b&w tz tape (only) for 30 bucks office max has a few of them and multiple tapes one tape STARTS at like 15 bucks or so so it ain't cheap lol but then I think sams has a 35 buck annual fee to join and atleast when I was younger you had to have a business or something (even being an rn works today) to get "in" my mom has a plus meaning there are extra times she can go and get stuff my grandfather usted to own a store when I was younger that's how we got the membership at first I think but my mom has said that anyone can join thesedays so who really knows?

the waste of tape annoys me as well... I figured out with mine that hooks to the computer.. if I do all the labels and print them all at the same time... the little tab between does not happen.. just at the start of the first one.. but even that annoys me.. don't see a reason for it

It's because the cutter is not right where it prints --and to be honest I don't think they could get that any shorter with the tz tape

Ok more on topic yes popsickle sticks are horrid I had them from the dollar store

Miniblinds are ok but the pack I got last year I planted 144? Seed types last year or nearly I used mini blinds and sharpie and it worked rather well I was able to Mark the international ones on the back as well the only issue is I had to throw most of them out when my uncle killed the seedlings (my guess is it's about 300 bucks worth of plants IN TOTAL in the 2 weeks and to think some were gonna be his to grow too!) so I'm still bugged by it especially with my moms "flower" kick and my only being allowed to grow ONE of MY containers how I want to!

Oh the best part of it? He had SPECIFIC instructions how to mix the spraybottle to mist with to how to mix the jug to water with EVEN how much water to water with I tryied to dummy proof it as much as possible then he takes them outside all day (when there last was like 30 min and I told him as much) waters everyone with the hose (a guess) and complains that there's no drainage holes

--so he wanted drainage holes but didn't want it leaking all over his counter top? When the tomatoes were waterbottles in a wooden crate? How the?

I think what tops all of that is him killing all of them and not even offering to pay anything as in total there were like 100 tomato plants (they were gonna be given away) then 2 72 pack trays of seedlings with all manner of things herbs flowers veg melon literally like everything you could try to plant outside in zone 5 from ALL of that I have 1 surviving tomato plant (it's still in the small container and starting to flower is getting plenty of water will be "survivor" strain after all of that) and 2 outher things a hab and something tagged as asparagus that I don't know if it is as dosent look right EVERYTHING else? Dead from his care or my carelessness after he killed nearly everything

One think is for certain next year I need to get 2 deco hangers 1 for the topsy turvy tomato the outher for the topsy turvy pepper and I will ONLY be growing seeds for my garden (possibly to help people as the tomatoes) but NONE for my uncle! Especially if he can't take care of that many when the directions were so specific that even a monkey could follow them (granted a well trained but still) it's rather depressing --but hey when thing go to he'll as I've heard they will "some day" then he will be wishing he saved seed and had taken better care of my plants and had LEARNED but meh that's on him not me

I love the great ideas for labels that everyone has posted.
We changed our vertical blinds to mini blinds and my hubby was going to throw the old ones away. I kept about 10 slats, and should have kept more. I cut them into lengths for garden labels, pot size labels, mini pot labels etc. Now I just cut the pieces into strips. I use either a pencil or paint pen to write on them. I prefer using the paint pen. I just got so tired of buying labels.

Really great ideas here on cheap labeling material.
But you know what I found---you CAN use the wood popsicle sticks-
but they need to be dipped in disinfectant first---I dip them or spray them
with hydrogen peroxide then there is no problem with molds.
