Hi Ann, The labels that I bought were marketed for an inkjet printer. They also sold them for laser printers but since I have an inkjet printer, I tried those. I've read alot about laser printers being used for outdoors print but never found inkjet until now. I sure hope they work. I know they're sticky because I hand printed on one and put it on a plastic cup then put it in the freezer for 2 days. Then it went outside in the rain for the past week. I tried pulling the label off and it's STUCK!!! This is great, becasue all the other labels I've tried just fall off the plastic pots in about a week. These do stick very well. If the printing will last, I'll be tickled pink.

Hi Michele, I've bought the last tape from Ebay but it's been 5 years ago, so I don't even remember the price. I know at the store, it was around $30 for 3 rolls. I haven't looked to see if it's tripled in price the last 5 years like everything else has! I will continue to use these labels for my hybrids. I really like the Brother Label Maker. I was looking at one to attach to the pc when I discovered the "weatherproof" address labels. I sure hope these things work. If I could get 3 years use from them, it would be wonderful.

My pc is broken. I'm about lost on this one. So, I'm only online briefly, then gone to do some long overdue magazine reading.

See you good folks later, Mona

I use rough garden maps - they also help me to plan. But they are only as good as I make them, I have to keep them current.

I also use the "Impress-o-tags" Just started with them last year, so the verdict is out.

When I receive a shipment of daylilies, I plant the tag that came with them in the ground - just in case. Every now and then I come across something that just doesn't make sense - hopefully this will help.

For dips, I put an asterisk in front of the name: *Catherine Neal

This year I have taken those garden maps, shrunk them down a bit - and squished them all one one side of a sheet. I am going to use the garden maps to help me with bloom information. 1 for each day. I can highlight the bloomers, and make notes on the back. As long as I date the sheets, I can go back to them to put the information in my database. I hope it works, instead of those scraps of paper that I can't decipher a week later.~Jan

Jan, interesting idea with making a sheet for each day for data.

Also, one could just use one sheet and make a dot for every day the plant is in bloom with a date for first bloom. That would be fun to see as well.

Well, maybe that would only work if they were all in clumps...

Me? I'm lucky if I just get to see the daylilies, take some pics, and spread some pollen. I have WAY TOO MANY DAYLILIES! HELP!!!

BB- having too many daylilies is a problem???

After last summer, which was like my first full year with DL, I realized that what I was doing for notes - especially on the unregistered "cottage dayliles" (part of our western PA cottage is on a former daylily farm which was last utilized in the 60's - so far I believe they are all dips) that I have transplanted up here, was not working. Notebooks, scraps of paper, you name it - I was recording it, and not having the time to transfer the info into my files - or not remembering what all of my notes meant.

I am hoping this garden map sheet will help. If I remember to date it each day, then even if it is several weeks before I enter the information in my database, I will still be able to figure out first bloom, last, etc. This is untried, ask me about it in the fall to see if I liked it - or what changes I made. My daughter in law has my camera, so I am unable to take a photo and post it right now to show you what I am talking about. ~Jan

I have seen a map of a flower bed in which only numbers are shown on the map itself, with the map key at the bottom (or on another page) showing all of the names of the flowers. That would show those long names that wouldn't fit so well on the actual map.It could be digitized if desired. These maps would take much time to create, but can save much heartache if something were to happen to your markers. We learned that "permanent" markers are not very permanent, and that inkjet ink on "weatherproof" label runs like a scalded cat when it gets wet.

Oh, my goodness yes! You just wait. This daylily addiction is compulsive and the darn things grow into clumps!

You know you have too many, when you forget their names. Names of daylilies that you at one time spent $100 on! YIKES...

(don't wanna blame it on old age now, do I?)

OK, I bought the Brother Ptouch 2430 labeler months ago. Today, I have been trying it out. Can someone send me a message about how to get 3 lines on the 1 inch tape lol. Thanks!

I have Eons markers now but may line some duplicates out next yr. Someone sent me blinds with the name of each plant this Spring. Anyone have a clue what might hold on those. They still are clear in Oct.
Or another cheap way to mark those you plan to sell.

We use the cut mini blinds with the name written on them with the Elmers paint markers that you get from the craft section of Walmart (or something similar). I have seen these written on with pencil also and that stays really well. You could also use the waterproof address labels and print them from the computer (you would need a laser printer because inkjet will run when it gets wet).

I use cut mini blinds for the seedlings for a temporary label, and use a black paint pen
from Walmart. The writing lasts for several years.

Also, hubby made aluminum plant markers that look like Michele's. They are painted green and
labeled with a white paint pen. The markers last several years also, and are used for the
registered plants. To reuse, just repaint with green and re-label.

I also make maps for all the beds on the computer along with a print-out copy, and a
back up on disk as well as external hard drive. I also know where the registered plants
are from memory, but the newest seedlings not so much.

My Daylilies are in 2 large gardens and are in rows. Each row is numbered and there are large white painted stakes with the name of each variety on them. I have maps of each garden with row number then plant number. Last year I ran out of the large stakes and someone had given me some stakes that were cedar. I cut them to 18" and used these in the new part that was added on to bed number 1. These look much nicer than the large white ones so eventually I will replace the white with the shorter natural wood ones. As for shipping labels I did use the vinyl 7" write on labels but found out that the mini blinds work just as well. I use a punch to make a hole in it and fasten it with a tie. I put in a large display bed this year and in it I used the plastic T markers you can by at Walmart or Home Depot. These will work for now but I would like to but the metal ones in like Michele has. I will have to take photo of it next year and post. I think it will be quite nice. It has 35 of my newer Daylilies, 15 Iris,TB,BB,and Dwarf,Japanese Lilac Tree,Tree form Peony,Hibiscus, Lupines, and Coneflowers in it.

Paula, that sounds like it will be beautiful! I have a mixed perennial bed but also have a newer daylily bed that is 3 rows wide and about 70 feet long. What do you use on the mini blinds? Paint pens?

I use the mini blinds for plants that are being sold and/or shipped by punching a hole to use tie and writing on it , the plant name with a sharpee permanant marker. I use a paint pen for writing on garden stakes.

I grow daylilies in boxes. Because I'm beachside, we get a lot of salt in the air so the only type of marker that lasts for me are the Kincaid stainless plant markers. They are reusable and when they get nasty from removing multiple labels, then I attach new faces plates I've purchased. With the p-touch label, these plant markers stay legible for a long time.

I also keep maps of each of the 6 boxes on my computer. Lately, I've been using new maps with colored daylily pictures (instead of names) so that I can see what the box will look like when I get done transplanting the daylilies. Time consuming but much easier than making a big OOPS!! during the planting process. Down here, I will start around Nov. 1 and try to get everything done before Thanksgiving.

I have used several methods to mark plants and to make maps. Here is the link to a thread I started several years ago where I talk about Bed Maps: The thread "How do you map your beds?" in Daylilies forum

When I first plant new daylilies I like to use plastic knives. I bought a huge box from Costco and wrote on them using a paint pen (sharpies did not last and pencil would not write on the plastic). I have since bought some Eon markers and used them on some of the established beds. I had intended to use the laser printed labels on them, but never got around to it. Sad A year and a half later I decided to just go ahead and do something else as the markers were doing me no good in the garage. *Blush* I just wrote the name on the plate using a china pen. We shall see how well that lasts. I made them Spring of 2012 and so far they still look great. The china marker has the added advantage that the writing is easily removed using a bit of oil on a rag and some elbow grease. Smiling

Here is one of the plastic knife markers which I also use on seedlings.

This is one of the Eon markers I wrote on with the china marker. It has the name of the plant, the letter/number designation I gave it for internal ID (W7) and the bed location (FLU F22). You can also see the old plastic knife marker that I just left in place when I added the new one. Like others here, I always try to take a picture of the plant marker then a picture of the flower to make it easier to label the photos when I get around to it sometimes months later. Sad

Hi, Laura!
A older friend of mine sells dls locally and she does the knife tags also. I never had asked what she uses to write on them, but I bet it is the paint pen.

Nice pics Smiling

I bought my garden markers from Everlast Label Company, and couldn't have been more happy with the price and service I received from them. I was thrilled! I used the P-touch labeler to make the labels, and they have held up really well. I used the ones for extreme weather, and they haven't faded at all in three years.

For seedlings, I use mini-blinds, which I write on with a pencil. The pencil is as clear as can be after 2 years. I do have other plants that I've marked with the mini-blinds and pencil, and after 4 years, the writing is still as clear as it was the day I wrote it.

I did use some of those paint pens, and had horrible results. Totally faded out after a year and I can't read anything!
