Well.. I've never been a big fan of garden gnomes till today..ok.. they are usually cute .. but little wow factor..
I went with a friend to tour this art show here.. before it opens to the public tonight.. it's called the Bruceannual.. held every two years to coincide with the Whitneys biannual show.. kind of a response by the new world order... and there was a group of garden gnomes like no other... the artist lives a couple of blocks over from me here in Brooklyn.. each is made to look like a famous artist.. these were the origional clay works.. about 12" tall... he'll later cast them in resin.. should I tell you who is who oh.. maybe later..

All I can say is WOW!!!

Here is Leroy. He lives with my MIL now. I got him as a gift from my sis several years ago. He had lost all his paint and looked pretty pathetic. I painted him up and now he lives in luxury in my MIL's family room!! Clifford and Norman are currently out in my newly created hibiscus garden. They will go to live with Leroy when my MIL comes down in April. Clifford and Norman were in the same condition as Leroy but now look awesome. Smiling

Gordon. Oh goodness! Amazing.
The first one I knew was Vincent. I swear it looks just like him, and then there's Andy and of course Pablo. Amazing. And is that Salvadore Dali? No, can't be, where's his swirly mustache? So I'm not sure of a couple of them. Maybe Monet? Maybe not. But how clever it all is. I wish I could see them a little better. I thought for a minute one was Renoir, but now I'm second guessing myself so I'd better stick with the ones I know.
I never liked gnomes much either, but these I love.

Sally, yours is very cool, now that I'm ID-ing them, he looks like Rip Van Winkle with that beard.

What a nice late night surprise. And how fun.
I'm fast changing my mind about gnomes.

I've never been a gnome person either, but those are very cool. Thanks for the chuckles, Gordon. I'd even buy one. Probably too pricey though. Green Grin!

well.. glad you liked them... I sure did.. a half hour or so.. after he was explaining just where he lived.... I ran back and asked if it was the house with the pile.. like about 5 dozen or so gnomes that live in a concrete front yard.. with plastic flowers.. he said no.. he had started his gnomes before moving in near by... other wise he would have thought these gnomes in the yard... had visited him in the night ..and put the idea into his head...
Tee... yes I imagine these origional ones are pricey .. don't know about the ones he'll cast from them.. guess that depends on how they are cast..and who does them. not to mention the painting.. Right Sharon.. like what would the chairs cost.. if you were paid by the hour at say $30/hr..
yes , Sharon.. you got most of them...ID'd right.. Vincent.. Pablo... and Andy.. you can see the scar on his stomach from when the actress Valerie Sloanas shot him three times.. then Georgia O'keeffe.. with her white flowers... he's got her holding lilies.. and she likely did paint some.. but the usual white flowers you see her doing are either the moon flowers.. or a white datura.. so you might have been led astray with that one... the last one.. I can't recall just who that one was.. I didn't recognise the name.. something bouswarzee.. after an hour or so on google.. I see just who it was...

Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (French pronunciation: [lwiz buʁʒwa]; 25 December 1911 – 31 May 2010),[1] was a renowned French-American artist and sculptor, best known for her contributions to both modern and contemporary art, and for her spider structures, titled Maman, which resulted in her being nicknamed the Spiderwoman.[2] She is recognized today as the founder of confessional art.[3]
In the late 1940s, after moving to New York City with her American husband, Robert Goldwater, she turned to sculpture. Though her works are abstract, they are suggestive of the human figure and express themes of betrayal, anxiety, and loneliness. Her work was wholly autobiographical, inspired by her childhood trauma of discovering that her English governess was also her father’s mistress.
http://www.google.com/search?p...
it's got to be her.. as he's done her with her spiders...I remember her work now.. but didn't connect her with the name ..
well this is about garden art..
sorry about the picture quality.. but they were just done with the phone.. I hadn't planed on the trip to the show... I'll go back with the camera..
oh i took a second one of Andy.. showing him holding the hose for a tiny garden pond.. which got missed in the first shot..well it misses it also I guess.. yes .. I'll reeturn... the show runs for about 6 weeks

I would never have thought Georgia O'Keefe. Frieda Kahlo came to mind, but the flowers were more like those her hubby did, so that was confusing. Sure looks like Andy and VanGogh, though. And Picasso. What a crazy idea, but fun! Not very familiar with the 'Louise' character, interesting reading though.

Artists love to cast their own 'angst' as their muse.

yes.. not Frieda's lilies. [ I've forgoten her ].her things were scarey... her work was described as being like a ribbon around a bomb... her husband Diego Rivera painted bunches of them.. [ see photo...] that threw me off at first as I don't think of Georgia with lilies.. although I did see a few pictures of hers that featured lilies.. she's always with the moonflowers.. or datura in my mental pictures
so.. your pansys stand up to any of these.. mentioned masters.. sit back and enjoy them as art.. which says something other than just showing a flower.. bothered by having them used.. break a leg off the chairs.. then noone could confuse them as anything else..

yes... they are as they say.. a work of art.. funny thing at the show were lots of pieces made out of the 2" foam I use so much... in the first photo every gnome is seen working out on a hill of green... it's all the same moss i used to use many years ago for my art... it was the inside of the computer I retrofited.. and the mosss that covered the clothing I had made back eons ago.. we'll get some more/ better photos of it all on my return... but first the big orchard show @ the botanical gardens is calling.. it's featuring a bunch of verticle wall growing .. also..

OK...How to...
Seems to be a metal surround 1/8 - 3/16 x 4 " it's likelt with other verticals asross the length... to keep the sagging of the 2" x 2" wire that's across the front.. you can see it sticking over at the ends likely spot welded to the support steel.. in behind the wire they have pockets of moss and roots with internal drip irrigation [ likely ] you have to click on the first picture to see the construction I'm talking about

So... what can you do once you start making pannels of plants... perhaps an arch way..
Thumb of 2012-03-04/GordonHawk/f487e1
Well if you have pannels.. and stack them up together .. I guess you could make wall panels

Thumb of 2012-03-04/GordonHawk/e835b6
MMMMM so.. if I put 4 panels together I'd have a plant house
