One of my all time favorites, Peony 'Illini Warrior'

Paeonia 'Illini Warrior', (2-SL-R) herbaceous Hybrid Peony, (Glasscock -Falk, 1955), USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Tall, single, brilliant red petals, cupped, golden stamen boss, red mottled stems, fragrant, early bloomer, Michigan Bloom Month 5c.

Bred by Lyman D. Glasscock (1875-1972) Elmwood, Illinois. Parentage unknown. Elmwood is not far from the ""Fighting Illini"" athletic teams of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, thus the name of this hybrid. This is one of the tallest peonies that I own and even with good support, I have occasional wind damage. Scapes rise above the foliage about 8 inches. This year (2018), the foliage was about 44 inches tall and some of the scapes reached 50 inches.

School colors are orange & blue, but this red is outstanding.

Very interesting, Frank! And a pretty peony, too.

Lyman probably lived so long because he wanted to see his seedlings bloom! We gardeners always have something to look forward to seeing!!

Thumbs up
LG - My garden grows with love and a lot of hard work.

Paeonia 'Mother's Choice', (3-DB-WH) lactiflora cultivar Peony, (Glasscock, 1950), USDA Hardiness Zone 2, large double, white petals, occasional red edge, side-buds, strong stems, midseason bloomer, Medium height, Michigan Bloom Month 6a.

Seedling of Polar Star. APS Gold Metal 1994. No buds in 2015. Flowers quite large and requires support. Had red edging on the center petals in 2017.

I had it supported in 2018, but the blooms still tended to kiss the ground. For this photo, I had to hold up the bloom with one hand while shooting with the other:) May need a larger support structure for next year.

Yes, if only 'Mother's Choice' had the strong stems to support its most perfect flowers.

Not sure if I should add this peony after I was greatly disappointed by purchasing a Mother's Choice peony from Gilbert Wild which turned to be a mislabel, a NOID white.
