We just tilled and planted grass seed on Saturday. The creek (dammed pond) you see in the background is probably 18 feet deep now, and 50 feet wide.

On a positive note, I know why now I can't grow tulips.. I was retarded when I planted them! I planted them according to the instructions.. silly silly me. LOL Apparently, here, we have to plant them about 8-10" deep ( Shrug! Shrug! Shrug! ) because of the cold. I do have a few tulips that I planted back in '05 when I first bought the house & they finally bloomed for the first time last year. They've popped up out of the ground & I may get some flowers this year, too. But my grape hyacinth still hasn't gotten out of the "droopy" phase yet. I'll be watering definitely on Friday & Saturday... hope that should wake everyone up!

Does anyone else here get seasick while pruning roses? The hybrid teas are okay because they have thick stems that don't sway in the breeze after you cut off the end of the cane, but the others send me running inside for a Dramamine pill.

uh, no.. don't get seasick. Then again, haven't seen the sea in years & years & years. LOL

Can't prune yet. Soon, very soon. Lilacs are starting to leaf out nicely, but forsythias are still sitting there like bumps on logs. Grrr...

I'm highly susceptible to motion sickness. The worst bout I ever had was when I watched my niece making her bed, which was a water bed and kept making waves the whole time. Ugh! I always take meds before I travel anywhere, but I don't always prepare for the everyday things like pruning.

Oh dear! Your inner ear must be really messed up.. did you sit to close to a firecracker or something as a child? have a balloon pop next to your ears? Vertigo can be dealt with with medication if you're interested.

Years ago, I had a homebound teaching assignment for a girl who had such severe vertigo that she couldn't walk, couldn't leave the house. Another girl in a body cast from a severe wreck was actually more mobile.
Only problem I've ever had was once while riding in the back seat of a car going down a twisty mountain road with tall trees on both sides. Funny, though, I have no problem if I'm riding in front seat or driving. oh I guess I did get dizzy once when I was climbing a bridge on a windy day...won't do that again. I can't imagine getting that sensation just from branches swaying. Wind never stops blowing here, so that would be devastating! Sorry, Zuzu.
On another note...does anyone grow Summer Snow? I just bought it, and helpmefind says it's thornless. I see a few thorns on this one.

I've had some severe attacks of vertigo, but Meclizine always cures it. I don't have any balance unless I'm staring straight ahead. You should see me trying to get to the mailbox at night without a flashlight. I end up practically walking in circles. Hilarious! There's clearly something wrong with my inner ear, but I don't know when or how it happened. It must have happened gradually. It's funny because I was a gymnast for years when I was young and I had no trouble with the balance beam and trapeze. Now I can't even walk downstairs without holding on to the bannister. I can ride escalators all day as long as they're going up. I can't come back down unless a lot of people are standing in front of me to block the view or I find an elevator instead.

Zuzu...I was writing while you were posting...not accusing you of combining Everclear and knockouts... *Blush*
Actually I had a serious thought--neck injuries can give the symptoms you have. Bending and pruning for more than a few hours can sure pinch a neck nerve and it can stay that way a long time.

Of all the accusations! I don't even know what Everclear and knockouts is (or are). Rolling on the floor laughing

This started when I was about 21 and I didn't garden then. I can't think of anything that might have caused it.

Let's blame it on gymnastics. It was harmful in so many ways. I think it stunted my growth in a peculiar way. When I gave it up at the age of 16, I was still only 4'6". I grew 4 more inches in the next year and kept growing until I was 21, which is uncommon. I topped out at 5'4" but I've lost two or three of those inches in the past few years, now that I'm a doddering old lady.

No, actually it's pretty common to keep growing into your 20s. I didn't top 6' until I hit 20 myself.. I hit 5'4 at 10 years old and stayed there for a few years. At 16 I hit 5'8, then 18 I was 5'10. So that's pretty common I think.

But I *have* heard of the problems with gymnasts. The human body is geared for growth during those extremely formative years between 6 & 16 and I've heard & read a lot about how female gymnasts feel that their lives have been put completely on hold until they stop with the extreme regimented exercise plan. When I started college, my first roommate was a strange duck. She'd done marathons her entire teenage years and came to me totally freaked out one day because she was bleeding from.. there. Uh, yea, that's normal.. hello... it's called your menses. She'd never had her period in her entire life because she'd done so much exercise and heavy training that things just weren't working right. I went with her to the school medical clinic (her family was about 1000 miles away & I was the only one she knew.. and I'd only known here for 2 months!) and the nurse practitioner explained on how heavy exercise can prevent a woman from maturing. She stopped her daily 10 mile runs and actually started to fill out & not look like a 10 year old girl. She went a little crazy when her hormones actually started to kick in.. she moved out & off campus with her best friend (not me) like 3 months later and, well, to be honest, that house was a little popular with the frats, if you know what I mean. Sad Oh well, as long as she was safe, that's all that matters.

I'm thinking Everclear & trying to prune Knockouts. That'd be almost as dangerous as pruning a George Burns while stone-cold sober.

Everclear: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E...)

95.5% ethanol alcohol, 4.5% water. 151 proof. Great for degreasing your engine or killing braincells by the millions. Nasty shit.

Yeah, with the combination of ballet and gymnastics, not to mention anorexia and bulemia (which were necessary because the coach slapped anyone who went over 75 pounds), maturation is long delayed. I didn't have a "crazy" phase, however. I was still a believer then and was scared of going to hell. Hilarious! I got crazy much later.

Yeah, the Clean Ocean post is what made me think or the Everclear. Now in the light of day, I'm wondering why I made that connection.
Zuzu, I was a gymnast too! 13% fat, no more for so long. And I got taller in college when I stopped gymnastics. almost as tall as Toni!
I have this awful group of autoimmune diseases and one of them (ankylosing spondylitis) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pu... which has made my back ache for years. I ignored it because my back always hurt from gymnastics and injuries. A rheumatologist finally gave the pain a name a few years ago. Every month I go in for a 3-4 hour, ($5800) infusion to combat it. Anyway the doc had an intern with him one day and he asked how long I had it, and I said I didn't know, because I always blamed gymnastics. The doc said....you were a gymnast? That's why you are still walking! Normally someone who has this attack their hips and neck is in a wheelchair by now. He said, the early gymnastics, and the flexibility it gave me, has saved me. Wow! So, long story, be glad you endured that pain when you were young. Funny how that gets you so used to pain that you ignore it. Sticking tongue out Glare

I have been known to topple over while in the rose garden, but that's usually while holding my second glass of wine in one hand while over-reaching with my pruners in the other - not a smart thing to do!

HAHAHAH!! Mike - I wouldn't recommend doing ANYTHING with that second glass of wine in your hand.. except for perhaps reaching for the bottle for that 3rd glass! Pruning's dangerous work! Trust me, I know.. 2 stitches on my left index finger from pruning with brand-spankin' new sheers.
