Speaking of quizzing, is there a tell as to bloom size with Crocus? Yellow Mammoth blooms are twice the size of Prins Claus if that is what I have. Also are Crocus generally good increasers?

The ones I've had that spread the best are the tommasinianus ones, like Barrs Purple and Ruby Giant. Those spread well, and obviously by seed as I find them far away.

Don't know about tommies as I don't have any yet but my large flowered crocus haven't spread. Sometimes though a few will pop up in the oddest places were I know I never planted any. Must have come up from seed. I plan to get a bunch of tommies this fall including Ruby Giant.

Does anyone know how long it takes a crocus to bloom from sprouting. I'm going to try and force some and need them to be in full bloom for April 12. I thought I would plant them up this week and leave the in our garage near the back door (coolest spot), then put them in the greenhouse mid-March. Every year we have a large garden show mid-April and it is always fun to enter their people choice container competition. 2013 theme is "Seasons for the Senses" which can be a display of one season or more. I thought I would do all four seasons and put it on a large lazy-susan to turn and look at each one. If the crocus' work out, I will also try and find miniature daffidols in the stores late March. I am also starting some seeds extra early (alyssum, stock, short sweet peas, etc.) I'm not sure if I will be able to get a dwarf sunflower to bloom for mid April, but will try (fall display). Any ideas? Do you think 5 weeks is about right for the crocus to bloom?

Gosh, I wouldn't think that long, maybe 2 weeks? I know they need a chilling period of about 4 months.

Neat project.

A maximum of two weeks. Boy, I'm a negative person today, aren't I. I hope you get some other input, also, to compare. You're quite a bit cooler than we are, so they might last longer for you.

They might have some early pansies in the stores, too, that would do well for your project. It's one of the first things we have here.

To be on the safe side I would do quite a few plantings of the crocuses and bring them in at different times.

Yes good idea on the multiple plantings of crocus. It's such a tight window to have them blooming for that date. Actually, we will be too cold out for them to bloom outside the end of March, so I'm going to bring them from the garage into the heated greenhouse. mid March

I hope the squirrells left me some crocus. I planted 500 of the large flowered mix in between my roses in my southside rose garden. Now I see that there are plenty of holes where the squirrels must have dug up the bulbs. Hopefully not all of them.

Trying for crocus in bloom---I would make up several small pots,
and keep them cool until mid March,--- and then start bringing them into warmth ,
one at a time, to see how long for them to bloom.

The contest is mid April, but there may be leftovers from Easter around?
I am not home all winter so I don't know if I can get something going in between trips.

I am not starting any seeds, indoors, until end of February----
just petunias, this year, and they won't flower for April.

I'll have to come up with a container from what I have,--
or what I can find in garden centers.

I have a new grandson coming on the Island---so maybe since they are ahead of us-
while I am out there----I might pick up some plant material for a container entry.
