It's been over ten years since the incident in question. In that time, Shoe's memory hasn't failed him at all because this is PRECISELY the way I remember it, too. Down to the actual words and pronunciations, Shoe has accurately told this story.
I laughed and laughed tonight til my stomach ached. What a great time that was, and what a triumph for me that I was able to carry him along for so long.
Somehow I had learned of his chicken situation, so I had enough facts to make a believable story. The Main Street bit was, I think, a complete guess and it was good fortune that he actually had customers on that street.
The funniest part was, though, that if my memory serves, I had a real reason for calling and the Billy Hawthorne bit just hit me as the phone was ringing. The whole thing was made up on the spot (again, if memory serves me)
